Virginia-based photographer Jon Phillip Sheridan shot a beautiful series called Residual. Of the work, he says: ‘Behind highway motels and apartment complexes, primordial forces seek to reclaim even the most developed areas at night. Entropy is at work and disorder strains to break through. This is the focus of all my work — my curiosity in exploring this shifting awareness of space and the human patterns that mark it’.
I wonder what my generation of counter-culturalists has to offer in the way of personalities like Lou Beach, a former stunt pilot born in Germany to Polish parents, who made his name creating collage illustrations in the 70s and 80s for people such as Weird Al Yankovic and the Flying Burrito Brothers. These twin sixty-story towers to be built in Malaysia feature a combination of ‘continuous, flowing, double-curved perforated surface with a flickering, crystalline, transparent single-curved surface that is triangulated on an enormous scale’. The design by New York-based architectural firm, Asymptote, includes a 400,000 square foot retail section and the Penang Performing Arts centre.

There’s something quite attractively kitsch about the Lucky Dragons’ latest release, Dream Island Laughing Language. It’s undoubtedly unusual, and not too friendly on the ears, but something warm and fuzzy keeps creeping out of the broken drum rhythms and looped vocals. It’s a mish-mash of jangly folk licks, Squarepusher-style drum ‘n bass with a few Coco Rosie-esque experimental sound effects thrown in: intriguing, original, and fairly hard to describe!
