New Eyes Open, sponsored by We Are The Image Makers and Semi Permanent, will feature new work by thirty Australian artists, the majority of whom are emerging artists, with an aim to reinvent and open your eyes to contemporary Australian art. Amongst those showing are Kareena Zerefos, Ben Frost [above] and Jirat James Patradoon. New Eyes Open runs between April 1 and 9 at the aMBUSH Gallery in Sydney’s Waterloo.
As someone with a propensity for collecting anything and everything, my current obsession is mid-century paper ephemera. Or, if we’re going to be more specific than that, superbly designed Czech matchbox labels. When I’m not sourcing them myself, I seek them out online. Apocalypse Cakes is a hilarious blog featuring doomsday-inspired cake recipes such as Raining Blood Red Velvet Cake and Global Jihad Date Cake.
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
Attention Asian fetishists: Sanrio is about to open a Hello Kitty theme park in the city of Anji in Zhejiang Province, China. It will be the first of such parks outside of Japan.
If ever there was an opinion needed on the current Hip Hop scene, this is the one everyone should look to. More than likely, this homie is going to diss, if not one, then all of your favorite rappers and probably offend you. But I dare someone to say he is not speaking the truth. Plus, whose voice better to hear it in than that of Ghostface, Na’mean? I can read this blog for hours with a smile on my face.
I stumbled across the Hello, Blue Roses track, My Shadow Falls, the other week and it set my ears alight, this subtle but beautiful song and its cascading melodic line which will at once ingrain yourself in your inner-ear iPod and then disappear out the other end, leaving only the sweetest of memories. I was initially drawn to Belgium-born Christophe Coppen’s jewellery before discovering that he produces two mens and womens collections each year, consisting not only of jewellery, also of but couture pieces and home accessories. With seven interior collections to his name, and a past history as both a theater director and an actor, his work is an expression of his creative brilliance.
