Jimmy Joe Roche and Dan Deacon were in Hilvarenbeek, Netherlands, a while back where they made a film titled after the historic Dutch town. It’s completely hilarious, surreal, and absurd, but it somehow captures something about the pop-saturated, neon apocalypse a lot of us have in mind.

August 3, 2009 | New Art | by Gerry Mak Highly recommended by the LAEM team. |

My previous post about Jimmy Joe Roche was less than glowing because I based my opinion on a few silly videos I saw which embodied a certain type of sloppy-passing-for-DIY thing that pervades the art scene in Baltimore. Read more

One of Dan Deacon’s partners in crime is video/performance artist Jimmy Joe Roche. I saw one of Roche’s latest videos, Gather Round, this weekend at the Transmodern Festival, which consisted of the artist animatedly ‘preaching’ in front of a green screen background that shifted between color-saturated images of mountains, forests, and various other psychedelia. Though Roche seems to epitomize Baltimore at the moment with his crypto-hippie, neon-colored, absurdist mock-Americana, I have to wonder what all the fuss is about. I appreciate this latest iteration of the DIY spirit, but I get tired of the ‘just kidding’ vibe that guys like Roche and Deacon give off.

Kudos to Finnish artist Antti Pedrozo for creating a life-sized Transformer out of a huge block of ice.

I thought I’d check illustrator Johan Thornqvist’s site to see what he’s been up to lately, and I was totally floored by his new works that continue to beautifully meld photographs with innocently charming illustrative components. Read more

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. No, this is not a still from a Dr Who episode. It is, instead, the facade of the Wotruba Church, built between 1974 and 1976 and located in the beautiful Austrian suburb of Mauer, the 23rd district of Vienna. Now, if only all religious buildings were so damn adventurous. It would kinda make Christmas mass more enjoyable. Read more

The coolest band in Indonesia? I think so. White Shoes & The Couples Company describe themselves as a small band that is ‘influenced by Indonesian movie soundtracks from the 70s and inspired by the acoustic spirit of 1930′s classic jazz musicians’. But I like to think of them as carrying the torch for artists like Benny Goodman, Tahiti 80, and The Cardigans, all at the same time.

Listen to their track, Super Reuni.
