I’m usually not big into recycled jewelry, but these crystal pieces that won the Inhabitat’s Spring Greening contest are pretty clever. Though a lot of recycled material jewelry has an unfortunate resemblance to the trash it was up-cycled from, these crystal earrings bear very little resemblance to the CD jewel cases they began life as. This is some of the most successful recycled jewelry I’ve found.

What’s more fun than blowing bubbles again and again — because they have a five-second lifespan? Wearing a cluster of bubbles around your neck that refuse to burst, that’s what. These bubbles are really glass spheres and the necklace is designed by Italian siblings Marina and Susanna Sent. They hail from Murano, a place renowned for its longstanding art of Murano glass-blowing with Venetian glass.

Erin Lightfoot is a ceramic artist based in Brisbane. Starting her career as a graphic and fashion designer, Lightfoot’s love of physical objects drove her to select ceramics as the medium to launch her self-titled brand. Creating everything from bangles to vases, Lightfoot crafts by hand, pouring insane amounts of effort and love into each piece. The quality is amazing: each object glows with a youthful sense of joy and colour.

Oktoberdee are a fun little company from Geelong, just out of Melbourne, that make beautiful bags and accessories. The Capsule Necklace (a new concept for the company) is a limited-edition piece which has caught our eye. It’s made from two vintage vials that have been delicately finished with leather, natural fibre cord and feathers. The coolest part of the whole necklace is that the vials can actually be opened and the feathers replaced with a finding of your choosing. Costing just under 50 clams, why wouldn’t you pick one up?

We had Hoxton Street Monster Supplies in our sight last year for their tasty goods ranging from Olde Fashioned Brain Jam to Tears of Sorrow sea salt. They’ve now stocked their store with neck embellishments with pendants of unintelligible sounds like ‘UURGHHH’, ‘AARGHHH’ and ‘GRRRR’. Every piece is crafted by hand out of exquisite materials like ‘sustainably sourced human bone’, ‘slime-resistant malachite-substitute’ and ‘recently-petrified forests’ by independent jewellery company Tatty Devine.
