At a recent show, Janitor vocalist Scott Redding went into the back alley in the middle of their set to burn a bag that contained some of his own bodily fluids. At Whartscape a couple months ago, he took the stage naked, wrapped in plastic wrap, clutching real, bloody pig intestines and ended the show with his head being shaved. Occupying some fetid gutter between Terry Riley and Suicide — techno beats and sampled rhythms juxtaposed with harsh noise and schizophrenic vocals — most people may not quite appreciate what this duo has to offer, but they’re a perfect example of the type of uninhibited experimentalism that defines Baltimore’s art and music scene.
Gustavo Eandi’s drawings often look like poop in the best possible way. He’s got an instantly recognizable and bold style that evokes terror and revulsion without being overly explicit. Read more
I love how illustrator and artist Wesley Allsbrook colors her work with pulsating acid-like washes and varied textures, setting off her gorgeous animated line work just beautifully. Read more
Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more
On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.
Fashion blogger Tavi is biting, witty, articulate, and stylish for any age. The fact that she’s only twelve makes her kind of over-the-top amazing. Already an accomplished photographer and astute critic of all things wearable, the sarcastic pre-teen is probably sick of being described as precocious, but she’s the very definition of the word.
My friend Lenka Kripac, formerly of Aussie group Decoder Ring, now flying solo, has just released her debut single — The Show — and it’s as catchy a slice of pop hedonism as you’re ever going to hear. Be warned: one listen and you may never shake the melody.

In 2008, graphic designer Becky Edgington and illustrator Sarah Beetson created two limited-edition packs of playing cards featuring images from Beetson’s exhibition, 50 Bucks: Bring On The Sluts. The images were selected from almost 500 small artworks created on moleskine paper, inspired by vintage pornography and a trip to Japan. Read more
