As if this season’s dresses weren’t delightful enough, here’s another reason to liquidate some stock and ruin your credit rating. First Prada and James Jean, now the top end retailer, Nordstrom: the exploration of art by fashion is long overdue, but well worth the wait. The Nordstrom campaign brings together three great things: the Cuban illustrator Ruben Toledo, the fashion photographer Ruven Afanador and the elvin Jenny Sweeny. Just looking at it makes me want to wrap myself in Cavalli and paint my walls bone shell white.

Anyone who has ever been a fan of those old school cut and paste zines, band fliers, and the like, will really dig the work of Brooklyn illustrator, Ted McGrath, who creates the most fabulously rough and raw, spontaneous collages and ink drawings. When I first moved to London and didn’t know a soul, I joined up with the British Film Institute [BFI] and started going to the talks they put on. When I went to see Gene Wilder speak, all the know-alls in the audience kept asking questions, not to find out anything, but just to show off to the room how much they knew about film making. He got annoyed. Genius boy genius.
I don’t know a lot about The Sugars but I like what they do. Their sound is quite rockabilly but quite modern — like White Stripes. They put out a couple of indie singles and I’d really like to find some time to work with them.
DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. Petra Stefankova is a Fellow of RSA in London, a Channel 4 television Talent Award winner, and an artist in her own right. Phew! Her digital work is based on the surrealist technique of automatic drawing, which is then transformed into 3D CGI space. Read more

Woah, we’ve gotten to the postmodern phase of flash game history where social commentary, appropriation of ironic DIY style, and surrealist absurdity are the order of the day. That said, Jason Nelson’s i made this. you play this. we are enemies. is pretty fun, if you manage to see through the frenetic aesthetic to figure out what’s going on.
Fashion blogger Tavi is biting, witty, articulate, and stylish for any age. The fact that she’s only twelve makes her kind of over-the-top amazing. Already an accomplished photographer and astute critic of all things wearable, the sarcastic pre-teen is probably sick of being described as precocious, but she’s the very definition of the word.
Making your poodle into a miniature parade float may seem cruel and unusual, but my hunch is that the pups love it. What other breed can be shaved into the shape of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle? It’s all about the poodle pride. Read more
Adult Hotel opens in Nanning, China
State-controlled news outlet Xinhua reports that a new ‘adult hotel‘ is opening in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Province in southern China. Apparently state censors think homosexuals and tattoo parlors sully their nation’s image, but not establishments aimed at facilitating heterosexual unions. The owner is apparently worried his business will be perceived as a brothel. Hmmm. In any case, the photos of a staff member demonstrating the, uh, equipment is caption-worthy for sure.
