Remember the deserted island seized by Javier Bardem’s deranged Bond villain in Skyfall? That’s a real place in Japan. Located 15km off the coast of Nagasaki, Hashima island (also known as Gakuranman) used to host a flourishing mining town, but was subsequently abandoned by its inhabitants in the 70s when Japan’s reliance on coal dwindled.

It’s official, a James Bond villain’s actual lair has just been discovered. Well, not exactly, but it’s close enough. This incredible cavernous hideout is actually a data center located just south of Stockholm, Sweden. The data center was once an old nuclear bunker 100 feet below the ground, and it was even home to WikiLeaks for a short time. Now, this amazing space can even be rented out for art shows, raves, and other events.

One dubstep forward, two dubsteps backward. Looks like humans have found a way to make Hollywood films and trailers even more trippy: add dubstep. The new James Bond flick, Skyfall, mashed by pexpix to the strains of Camo & Krooked’s dubstepified take on the 007 theme, is the latest example. We are also very partial to the one for Christopher Nolan’s textbook mindbender classic Inception. Dubstep goes well with explosions.

Looks like the James Bond mould isn’t as cookie-cutter as you might think. In this infographic by The Economist, which pits all six on-screen Bonds against one another, you’ll see that Pierce Brosnan chalks up the most casualties while Timothy Dalton is the most pacifist with the least kills. Interestingly, Daniel Craig downs the most martinis but beds the least babes. There’s a message in there, we’re sure.

Although the music I make is electronic and undeniably pop, one of my musical mentors is the film composer John Barry, who passed away earlier this year. Barry’s legacy of film scores is diverse, but he is most remembered for this 007 films with the 1969 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service being his and my favourite. A perfect mix of drama, beauty and sadness.
