I’m sitting here listening to this Switch Remix of the Jacknife Lee track Making Me Money with a mind that’s buzzing from an extra strong cup of Colombian coffee and a foot that’s tapping so fast the damn thing may well drop off. Oh boy, just try getting this cracking beat out of your head.

Sao Paulo based artist Fernanda Guedes is a great admirer of that beautiful party crowd that goes out every night to dance like there’s no tomorrow: ‘These night owls are eager to make a statement through their attitudes, clothes, make up and ultimately, the places they go to. It is a fascinating theme for an artist’, she says. To know what is hot at the clubs around the world, she searched the internet for the best party photo coverage, which provided her with a insidery look into this exuberant realm, inhabited by kings, queens, princess, clowns and a lot of frogs and ogres. After weeks of packing Australia’s crate with the best of Aussie nightlife, our crate was farewelled in lavish style at the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange send-off party in Sydney last week. We discovered Australia is swapping with Brazil, so we’re hanging out for the samba and cachaça to sway ashore and lead us astray. I am really into Hong Kong action flicks from the 1980s and 90s. When I first moved to New York, there were a handful of curious friends who were also interested in watching movies such as City on Fire by Ringo Lam, which Reservoir Dogs was based on. How did they find videos like thus? At the legendary Kim’s Video in New York City. These days, City on Fire can be find online, and Kim’s is history. But all the videos that entertained the film geeks of this city for more than twenty years have found a new home in, wait for it, Salemi, Sicily. Yes, the southern island of Italy. Kim has recently relocated there, as this sad but heartwarming story about him in yesterday’s New York Times reveals.
The latest band to make LA proud is tropical-nu wave act Abe Vigoda. These guys are so new and so exciting that even your grandparents don’t know who they are. Yet! They describe themselves as tropical punk, but I like to think of them as nihilistic rockers — no form, no shape, just chaos. If LA’s new breed of punk popstars such as Health, Meiko Meiko and Pocohauntas make you tremble, then this band are sure to get you very worked up.
