Formed in 2003 by Brad Hargett and JB Townsend in New York, this band is a glorious ‘Noise pop’ blend of Joy Division and Interpol, with a pleasant splattering of their own individuality. It’s my first port of call if I want to get stuck into a big drawing.

Filmmaker and artist David Lynch just teamed up with Interpol for the animated short film I Touch A Red Button Man. The film was made to accompany the song Lights by Interpol — featured on the band’s self-titled fourth album. The clip was first unveiled during the group’s performance at Coachella earlier this year.

We’ve heard plenty about the disruptions, chaos and inconvenience the Icelandic volcano no-one can pronounce has caused. Now it’s time for, quite literally, the silver lining. This stunning video from Sean Stiegemeier steps away from the ‘mediocre’ in a dramatic way. Coupled with music by Jonsi (of sigur rós), his partner Alex Somers and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), it’s hauntingly beautiful.

I never thought the day would ever arrive after front man Paul Banks tried his luck with side-project, Julian Plenti. But Interpol have re-emerged from the dark and are back, giving away their first single Lights for free via email to thank us for the wait. Banks sings in his typical fashion, while guitars meander into a moody sound. The band have proclaimed their forthcoming album will be more like their favoured Turn On The Bright Lights days. Best news, ever.

It’s been a while since we last heard the clamorous sound of We Have Band, but for obvious reasons. Having toured extensively in 2009, the London-based trio took the later part of last year to enter the studio with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans). Now, the debut We Have Band album is due to drop in a few days. Read more

Sugar Army is the culmination of four dudes spending their lives in the dreamy slumber of West Australia, with their only saviour from terminal boredom being music. With the lengthy titled opener, And Now You’re Old Enough, I Think That You Should Know, earning these indie rock purists high rotation on Australian radio network Triple J and community radio, the cheeky quartet have just added a slot at the Big Day Out music festival to their list of accolades. With raw bone bass lines and insanely addictive beats, this E.P needs more than just kitschy multi-coloured teddies littered across the cover, it needs their trademark disclaimer — diabetics beware. Children in Rural Bengal are in a much worse condition socio-economically as compared to the disadvantaged children of urban areas. The plight of these children is virtually unknown to a large mass of people, which makes the situation critical. The political tensions of the recent past in West Bengal is also responsible for making life a little more tougher. While this essay does not particularly focus on the hardships of rural children, it lays emphasis on those innocent ones whose lives and futures are being played with … by politicians. Read more

The sky is falling. The world is ending. How do we deal with it? Since we can’t nail the CEOs and bankers that got us into this mess (instead, we’re bailing them out), let’s make light of the misery of people who make a living abetting the broken system.

The Duchesses recently sent us a copy of their latest EP, By Morning, released in April at the Excelsior Hotel in Sydney. The atmospheric four-track cuts through the usual noise and delivers a rhythmic mix of guitars, beats and vocals. It has our Newcastle office surging (singing?) through the dark lows and the hopeful highs. Read more
