Shark Bay Films shot this fascinating five-minute vid featuring some strange, strange, strange real-life sea beasts from Indonesia’s Lembeh Strait you don’t ever want to mess with.

The hideous-looking brainless and blind worm that drags fish underground is the stuff of nightmares, and I can see how Aphex Twin’s Richard D James, whose face has been everywhere, would fit right in on these terrifyingly pus-like frog fish that appear onscreen at the 2:56 mark.

Indonesian artist Veri Apriyatno has drawn himself into eternity. His hyperirealistic art is extremely detailed and well thought out. He creates illusions similar to those of M.C. Escher except with more personality and humor. At first glance, it’s honestly hard to tell if it’s only drawings or if Apriyatno is actually standing next to his drawings. Bravo!

You don’t want to cross these feathered little guys. They’re real tough customers. Or at least, that’s the way things seem in these humorous photos by Indonesian photographer Sijanto Sijanto. The last thing we expected to stumble across on Gili Trawangan was a boutique vintage clothing store. But tucked away from the main drag are some of the best vintage threads we’ve seen in a while. Vintage Delivery Store is the creation of Swedish couple Natalie and Johnny and their adorable 2 ½ year old son Noah, who sold their two vintage stores back home to relocate to the island of Gili Trawangan in Lombok, Indonesia, in search of an alternative lifestyle.

Every few months the pair head off on a buying trip somewhere around the world to source stock for the store and their loyal base of private customers. The store is an equal mix of women’s and men’s fashion, with cute vintage dresses, leather boots, vintage seventies posters, one-off tees and unique pieces like batik bikini tops from Thailand.

We bought leather lighter holders, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and a Guns N’ Roses poster for the boys at Gilinta and their entire collection of batik bikini tops. If you’re lucky enough to visit Gili Trawangan, this is one store that’s worth riding your little push bike to peruse.

The US Government has recently authorized a bill that allows eligible countries to trade debt for forest conservation pledges. Indonesia is one of the first to take advantage of the program, having the total of their US$30 million forgiven in exchange for conservation. This is the largest agreement for conservation ever reached. The agreement mandates that Indonesia put forward US$30 million over the next eight years into a trust fund for forest conservation and restoration work. The work could not come at a better time, as the Sumatran rainforest have been depleted by about ninety per cent, due to logging and clearing for agriculture.

The coolest band in Indonesia? I think so. White Shoes & The Couples Company describe themselves as a small band that is ‘influenced by Indonesian movie soundtracks from the 70s and inspired by the acoustic spirit of 1930′s classic jazz musicians’. But I like to think of them as carrying the torch for artists like Benny Goodman, Tahiti 80, and The Cardigans, all at the same time.
