I love the inspirational story behind this stylish pajama company, it makes me feel like there are still genuinely good people in the world. Punjammies is more than just a comfy pajama manufacturer. It’s a means of empowering Indian women who have been rescued from forced prostitution. Instead of just rescuing the girls and then leaving them helpless to the judgement of society, Punjammies provides an after-care center.

There, the women are given medical help, emotional safety, and education in a craft to help them support themselves. The girls are learning to sew and work as a team. They are learning to be self-confident and trust themselves and others. Punjammies is more than just wearing pajamas. It’s wearing hope.

In a culture where women are severely undervalued, the people of Piplantri village in India decided to take a stand. They found a way to put a measurable value on the lives of their women. For every baby girl born, 111 trees are planted. And not only that, but actual legal measures are taken to protect the girls. 

‘We make these parents sign an affidavit promising that they would not marry her off before the legal age, send her to school regularly, and take care of the trees planted in her name’, says Mr. Paliwal, the village’s former sarpanch Shyam. It’s a refreshing picture of new life being born.

Aditi Babel has many creative talents, illustration being one of them. Working as an independent book artist in Udaipur, India, Babel recently designed her cousin’s wedding invitations, which I loved so much I’m going to have framed. In Bangalore, India, which has a geeky rep for being a hub for India’s information technology sector, an offbeat attraction called the Dr Shankar’s Brain Museum, which is open on Saturdays from 10am-3pm, has a superb grey collection of unlabelled brains in jars.

Sounds like a visit is rightfully warranted. Also, you should tip off all your braindead friends before the zombie apocalypse takes place and you know, hordes of zombies overrun the place.

After the tragic death of his wife, Indian-native Dasrath Manjhi carved a 360-foot-long, 25-foot deep, and 30-feet wide through-cut which formed a road. Manjhi worked day and night between 1960 to 1982 to accomplish this remarkable feat. He decided to build this road after his wife died as a result from not being able to reach a hospital, so he wanted to make sure that no one else suffers the same fate. What beautiful dedication, and quite a story to tell the grandkids.

German artist Katrin Korfmann sure has an eye for colour. Flying high above the Hindu ritual known as Holi, Korfmann captured the famous event that sees thousands of people throw coloured powder and perfumes at each other. The images (Red, Yellow and Purple) change in hue as the festival goes on – different powders, different colours. What a beautiful way to welcome spring.

Celebrated by Hindus, the legendary Holi Festival takes place in India and Nepal during springtime. It’s a riot of colours with everyone throwing fistfuls of pigmented stuff at everyone else (the blue, apparently, stains like crazy and is notoriously hard to get out of skin and clothes). German artist Katrin Korfmann has been there and documented the colourful affair in her Kolorit series from an aerial perspective. There’s so much beauty in there.

In New York, it’s not uncommon to see ‘rat stations’ peppered throughout restaurant districts, intended to put a dent in the population of city pests. In Deshnoke, India, I had to leave my shoes at the door when I entered Karni Mata Temple, a rat station of an entirely different purpose. In Deshnoke, rats are revered as bearers of special blessings and deity favor, which you can curry yourself by purchasing holy food, “Prasad”, and maneuvering barefoot through rodent-filled hallways, to brush with the supernatural.

The amazing photo series called Trains taken by the internationally recognized American photographer Steve McCurry developed on one of his many trips to India capturing the country and its people. Only in the Indian village of Abhaneri can you find a well like this: the 1,200-year-old Chand Baori step well. Built in the 9th century, the 13-storey, 100-feet deep structure is entirely surrounded by maze-like steps — all 3,500 of these — for easy access to the water. It looks pretty mindblowing.
