Public-theater, culture-bombing, flash-mob troupe Improv Everywhere — known for gags such as the ‘no pants’ subway ride, the fake U2 concert, and slow-motion shopping at Home Depot — recently deployed 200 ‘agents’ to Grand Central in New York City, where they all froze in place precisely at 2:30pm. The crowd stood frozen for exactly five minutes, just long enough to delight the perplex crowd, and just brief enough to avoid irritating Metro North employees.
Josh Pogue’s style reminds me of old DIY punk and metal demo covers, but he takes things to a different level with his intricately patterned, fantastical scenes that look like pages out of a demented storybook. Read more
Mercedes Helnwein’s pencil portraits are hyper-realistic and expressive at the same time. She stays apparently faithful to her subjects, but utilizes poses and lighting to obtain dramatic and expressive images. Read more
Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.
Lost At E Minor co-publisher, Andy Howard, is on a whirlwind tour of America at the moment, en route to his new base in London. He’s been diligently documenting his travels through his camera, the images from his New York leg being particularly interesting. Read more
I’ve been a big fan of Michelle Vandermeer’s work since I came across her Mini Majellen zines at this year’s Sydney Writers Festival. Describing herself as a doer — as in one of those people who are always doing or making something — Michelle’s work, which includes book binding, illustration, jewelery making and her zines, stems from an internal creative springboard and a double degree in architecture and graphic design.
