Their latest collection, Echoes, has colourful figure-hugging minis for the girls, and digital silk printed tees for the boys. It’s up to fashion to fly in the face of the convention of the world around us. In an era of downsizing, down-scaling and down-playing, the Illionaire parade at Australian Fashion Week protested that the only way is up. The mood was immediately set as the space transformed into a fibre optic light-show and the deep voice of Grace Jones purred from the speakers. In ironic anti-recession styling, 80s-excess influenced detailing featured in ruffled leather and hot-pants. (Leather pants in summer? A sign of climatic uncertainty in our global-warming world, I guess, where we have to be prepared for four seasons in one day). The standout? A gold jumpsuit, hands down, paves the fashion pavement for a new generation borrowing from their Mother’s Dynasty days. The show went off with a bang, literally, with a gold foil glitter drop from the ceiling exuding positivity and excess – even as models slipped and slided through the foil pieces during the finale circuit. Whether you’re a billionaire or a nillionaire, Illionaire put an approving fashion-forward grin on everyone’s faces with their SS 09/10 showcase.

A perennial favourite, Autumn Whitehurst creates seamless vector pieces that shimmer with lustful beauty. We asked her how reflective her illustration aesthetic is of her lifestyle aesthetic: ‘My illustrations are much more streamlined than my lifestyle aesthetic. I grew up in a family of magpies and must be genetically predisposed to collecting things I don’t need. I’ll need to move into a bigger space soon or I’ll have to start throwing things out because the visual stimulation in my house is nearly suffocating. If you’ve seen the movie Max, and remember Max Earnst’s house, that would be quite close to my ideal. But I would love to remix that with the aesthetic of those old French colonial homes in Vietnam and then I’d be quite content. How it would be possible, I have no idea’. Read more
We love the vivid colours in the Freak La Notte range of t-shirts. The French label’s collection of shirts are like little canvases of super-styled surrealism – bold, elegant, and enchanting.

I love Brooklyn band Durty Nanas. They were formed in 2005 and play street spaces, galleries, lofts, and block parties. So I guess they are the ‘real’ Bloc party.
