Tom Petty meets The Pointer Sisters in a neon karaoke bar in Tokyo singing Tina Turner? Hmmm. The music of Iglu & Hartly is a real sonic milkshake, a genre blending, culture-defying laser show, featuring synths, raps, sailboats, inspiration. “We’re wide-screen,” says lead vocalist, Jarvis Anderson. “The album’s like that scene in The Wizard Of Oz when the picture flips from black and white into color. We want people to listen to our record, be inspired, look inside themselves and work out how they can dominate the world in their own unique way,” says Jarvis. “We’re about smashing down barriers.” Which they do nicely on their debut album, And Then Boom. Instead of demolishing the old Paddington Reservoir, architects TZG have incorporated into the design a new outdoor public garden in Paddington, Sydney. The results are stunning, with the nineteenth century structures providing an amazing starting point. Looking less like a garden and more like an overgrown ancient city, with the remnants of historic walls and vaults, this new public space is well worth frequent visits.
