Tucked inside the city of Reykjavík is a sleek, modern-looking little museum that just so happens to display nearly 300 phallus specimens from water and land mammals, including (supposedly) those from Iceland’s “Huldufólk,” i.e., elf-like “hidden people.” The Icelandic Phallological Museum features clean lines and a tidy installation that make it look like it could be just another one of Reykjavík’s chic design boutiques, but no, this place is actually a big ol’ collection of male genitalia. Fortunately, there’s a range of souvenirs to take home as well, including T-shirts, mink penises; and hand-carved keychains in the shape of copulatory organs. Seriously, what a bunch of dicks.

Choi and Shine have designed a series of giant electric pylons for the Icelandic Pylon Competition. They are described as being powerful, solemn and variable and that seeing the pylon-figures will become an unforgettable experience, elevating the towers to something more than merely a functional design of necessity. It certainly would get my vote.

The mark of a great photographer is the ability to imagine a scene from a different perspective. Anyone can hold an expensive camera and take the expected, cliche photos, but a creative mind thinks outside the box in order to get interesting shots. In the case of photographer Andre Ermolaev, he is able to abstract and recreate Icelandic landscapes by shooting them from an aerial view. We are transported to a new, alien world of craters, unnatural colors, shimmering waterways, and jagged coastlines. The photos feel as though we are viewing another planet via NASA satellite.

If Eskimos have 49 words for snow, does it mean that many types of snow exist in the world? And how about ice? Icelandic photographer Örvar Atli Þorgeirsson is no stranger to ice, and from the shots of aging ice (‘It starts as a snow fall a few centuries ago high in the mountains above… At last it ends up at the end of the glacier, maybe as a small iceberg before finally turning into water again’) in Skaftafell to red hot ice (‘ice bergs stranded on the black lava sand beach’) in the Jökulsárlón glacier lake he’s captured, there really is a lot of ice.

She blends this elegance of the old illustrations with bold colours and new ethereal layouts. The engravings take on a new life wrapped around animals or woven into ancient maps.

Designed by Icelandic creative, Hafsteinn Juliusson, the Growing Jewelry collection embraces nature in a most revolutionary manner, displaying live vegetation within striking silver casing. The grass needs to be watered every five weeks, and will live for a year, though it tends to survive longer at the Reykjavik Art Museum, where it lives on ‘sand beds under growing lamps’.

Her debut album, Please Don’t Hate Me (2006), topped the charts and went platinum in Iceland, and was the best-selling original album in the country that year, winning three Icelandic Music Awards. She will release her new album, Farewell Good Night’s Sleep, on her own Loo label in March 2010. It was recorded and produced in London by Liam Watson (White Stripes, Holly Golightly, James Hunter). Experimental artist Katie Paterson recorded the sounds made by three Icelandic glaciers and then pressed the noises onto records made from each glacier’s melted and re-frozen ice. As the Jailbreak blog notes: ‘She finished by playing the three ice records simultaneously for the two hours it took each to melt’.
