The bizarre combination of freezing cold winter and active volcanos are married together in these stunning photos by Denis Budko. The two seemingly opposite elements are found existing harmoniously in the cave of the far east peninsula known Kamchatka in Russia. Until 1991, the caves were strictly off limits to foreigners. But ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, fantastic natural wonders like this have been shared with the rest of the world.

These intriguing photographs show the frozen shadows left over after the surrounding ground has thawed. Since the sun doesn’t reach these areas, an icy remnant remains in the shape of the object casting the shadow. The results are uniquely beautiful.

So this is what fire looks like under single-digit temperatures. An empty warehouse in Chicago was recently ensnared in a massive blaze that had a third of Chicago’s firefighting force spraying water at the scene. They ended up covering affected areas — including surrounding buildings and cars — in ice. Even icicles formed on the fire hoses.

If Eskimos have 49 words for snow, does it mean that many types of snow exist in the world? And how about ice? Icelandic photographer Örvar Atli Þorgeirsson is no stranger to ice, and from the shots of aging ice (‘It starts as a snow fall a few centuries ago high in the mountains above… At last it ends up at the end of the glacier, maybe as a small iceberg before finally turning into water again’) in Skaftafell to red hot ice (‘ice bergs stranded on the black lava sand beach’) in the Jökulsárlón glacier lake he’s captured, there really is a lot of ice.
