I don’t care if it looks too good to eat, I’d definitely tuck into one of these ice-cream moon cakes created by London designers Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien for Häagen-Dazs. The White Moon consists of flavours including pistachio, macadamia nut, meringue and raspberry, while the Orange Moon is filled with chocolate, nuts and salted caramel. The designers say they were inspired by Georges Méliès’ 1902 silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune, Armenian surrealist Léon Tutundjian’s relief work of 1929, a childhood Bollywood song and the near-spherical shapes of early ice cream bombes. So a cake that is as pretentious as it is delicious. I’m OK with that… who has a spoon?

You know what they say about YouTube comments. Always read them. One went, ‘Never watch at this after 00.00 It was fuckin´horrible’. We clearly didn’t heed that and merrily skipped ahead to watch a Japanese bloke covered in goop stare at us as he ate ice cream off the top of his head. Another said, ‘everyone turn the Closed captions on…’, so we replayed it again with English captions. Turned out he was saying something about how eating ‘little babies ice cream keeps me young’. And then we read ‘now i wanna see a battery acid commercial’. Uh huh, you bet. This commercial for a Philadelphia-based ice cream parlour is probably the unhappiest ice cream ad we’ve ever seen. On a happier note, we’ve found our perfect Halloween costume this year.

The sun comes out, the temperature rises, and all of a sudden, everyone’s sporting an ice cream cone. But in cities where the sun shines on the daily, ice cream is more of an art to be perfected than a seasonal affair. Los Angeles is Exhibit A. Over in Beverly Hills, the fine folks that brought cupcake to its past glory, Sprinkles, have recently opened a white-tiled, neon-signed ice cream shop.

Though the vision is to put a new spin on old-fashioned favorites, Sprinkles Ice Cream has not lost its cupcake roots. On the contrary; here, ice cream in flavors like Cap’n Crunch, Salted Caramel, and Peanut Butter Cup are scooped into red velvet waffle cones or sandwiched between cupcake tops. The design is slick and playful, the ice cream slow churned and dense, and the lines long – but, at least it’s next to the original Sprinkles with only a 24-hour cupcake ATM in between.

Last summer, two MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) scientists were studying the effects of yogurt on obesity. What they didn’t expect was to see the mice they were using to grow bigger balls. First of all, the mice started to show a better, ‘luxuriantly silky’ fur. Then they figured out that the yogurt-eaters were having testicles about 15 percent heavier than the junk-eating males. Why did they think about measuring the mice testicles, I’m not sure. But the good news for men (and their women) is that yogurt is also available for humans. That’s right. So ask your supermarket for more information.

If you’re shvitzing in all this summer heat, reach for an ice cream with some chutzpah: Chozen Ice Cream. Created by Manhattanite Ronne Fisher and her two daughters, Chozen is an all-natural ice cream inspired by the sweets and desserts of their favorite Jewish holidays. There’s cinnamon ice cream with homemade raisin walnut rugelach, or there’s the Matzoh Crunch: vanilla ice cream with chocolate and caramel coated matzoh sprinkled with kosher salt. Coconut macaroon, chocolate babka, and apples and honey are also on Chozen’s list of artisanal ice cream sweets. All ingredients are sourced from local dairy farms and ‘authentic Brooklyn bakers’. Now, that’s kosher.

For several years, Las Paletas has been Nashville’s best-kept secret, quietly turning out Latin American-inspired ice pops from a modest storefront without so much as a sign to indicate its presence. Despite the lack of pretence, exotic knock-out flavors are listed daily on an old-school chalkboard under two headings; creamy paletas and fruity paletas. From these two varieties, you will find such flavours as chocolate wasabi, pineapple chili, Mexican caramel, hibiscus, and avocado. If these flavours delight your palate, forget the cone and try a paleta.

Remember the thrill you’d get to hear the ice cream truck jingling its way through your neighborhood as a kid? Those days may be long gone, but Milkmade Ice Cream wants you to rediscover some of that childhood glee. Now, though, there’s no need to sprint across the street to beat the other kids to the front of the line: these guys bring the goods straight to your front door.

And they’re some pretty tasty goods at that. The six-month-old Manhattan-based outfit has already created its own range of drool-inducing flavors like blackcurrant gingersnap, maple pancake, and even double chocolate chip with under-baked peanut butter cookie (sigh) — all made from local organic ingredients.

But don’t get too excited just yet. The subscription-based company — founded by two twenty-somethings who have been friends since their college days at Berkeley – only does deliveries, and right now they only deliver in one little corner of Manhattan. So unless you live somewhere south of West 35th Street, you’re out of luck, at least for now. But keep your eyes on Milkmade — they’ve got a stellar concept, and they’re already growing fast.
