China’s government has adopted a new plan that would enable it to become the expert in hybrid and electric cars. The plan, which would allow for more subsidies for cars in China, would also lower air pollution levels in Beijing and Shanghai, two cities that are smothered by the dirty air. The government has already taken steps to make room for more than a million electric or hybrid vehicles (including buses) on the roads. And because most commuters who live in the big cities almost never leave the city, the electric grid companies have been ordered to build fueling and charging stations all over suburban areas. While the desire to improve environmentally is appealing, many wonder why China doesn’t also allot for better — and safer — public transportation.
In her photo series Welcome To Paradise, Rivkah Young stages scenes to capture what we perceive by the term Paradise: ‘In order to declare this, humans create special places, at theme parks, shopping malls and urban residential complexes. Visions of something different — a tropical rain forest or African Savannah — are also created at the zoo or at water parks. The look of an urban place becomes a scenery-like projection of our visions’.

Nine months ago Sydney couple Matt Cribb and Bree Carter decided they’d take their relationship to the next level. They started making beats. Ed Janssen is famed in Melbourne for his jewellery designs, sold through cult Morrissey-friendly label This Charming Man. ‘The Knuckle Sandwich’ charm necklace (two pieces of bread on either side of a tiny set of brass knuckles, as pictured above) exudes an oddly amusing menace. More recently ‘The Bear Trap’ has been dangling from every second neck, wiping out hope for Melbourne’s unsuspecting tiny forest animals. Janssen is about to launch a new range inspired by the iconography of various secret societies.
