The Cullen, located in Melbourne’s stylish South Yarra, is one of three boutique hotels in the Art Series Group, which dedicates hotels to individual artists such as Australian greats Adam Cullen, John Olsen and Charles Blackman.

This beautiful boutique hotel experience immerses the guest in the aesthetic style of the artist. In The Cullen’s case, the work is dedicated to the Australian icon, Ned Kelly. As you make your way through the hotel, you can discern Cullen’s empathy for the bushranger and his disdain for the law.

While South Yarra boasts some of Melbourne’s best eateries, it’s hard to go past the Gramercy Bistro for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Gramercy brings a little slice of New York to the trendy Melbourne suburb, from the chop chop salad to the Reuban Sandwich. And you know it must pass muster when your local South Yarra bestie recommends it ahead of any other restaurant in the area.

Beautiful signature beds, perfect location, stunning views, unique artwork and fabulous food. What more could one ask for in a hotel experience? I’ll be back.

We stayed at the hotel courtesy of Mr & Mrs Smith. You can book Smith hotels via (1300-89-66-27) or at mrandmrssmith.com.

Fittingly called Tasting House and curated by Miss Cakehead, 14 cake artists took over 2,000 hours to bake and 900 hours to decorate the three-storey edible hotel. In the eight tasting rooms you’ll find “vanilla sponge cushions, windows and walls clad with 2,000 macaroons, a rug made from 1,081 meringues, marshmallow garlands, windowsills built entirely from cake and a bath filled with caramel-coated popcorn”.

Of course, it’s a pop-up hotel — somehow we didn’t think cake hotels were going to fit right into the whole sustainable architecture movement.

If someone had told us ten years ago that they could freeze a wave, we would have laughed them off. Okay, we stopped laughing. Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Hotel, which looks like a breaking wave that has stopped in its tracks — yes, all 26 levels of it — comes close.

The exteriors are crafted with aluminum and blue-plated glass. Wonder if the brave window cleaners who maintain the building ever fantasize about surfing during work hours.

Blame us for watching too many samurai films, but the idea of taking a dip in a scarlet-red swimming pool makes us excited. At The Library, a beach-facing boutique hotel in Koh Samui owned by Kasemtham Sornsong and designed by Tirawan Songsawat, you actually can. And it’s not like you’re going to find yourself in a bloody mess when you get out of the pool — it’s the red tiles that make it look bloody.

Haha, only in Belgium will you find the Sleeping Around hotel with, well, not a roving eye, but is roving nevertheless. Made from recycled shipping containers, the four-room hotel constantly pops up at new locations, aided by cranes that lift them onto a truck bed and transport them to the next ground of call. The only way to find it is by GPS. You know what they say: it’s not about the destination, it’s about how you get there. It isn’t too shabby either; floating box-spring beds with linen sheets and walk-in showers are part of the 20-ft room package. There are even separate container blocks for breakfast and sauna — fun!

April 6, 2010, I survived a death defying five story fall through Philadelphia’s Divine Lorraine Hotel. I spent the next ten days in ICU Psychosis in Hahnemann Hospital. During this time I had hallucinations of dead babies, riots, terrorism, hell, and 4Loko. I talked to inanimate objects, perceiving them to simply be French tourists. Six months after my recovery, I made a series illustrating my hellish voyage into my own mind. This experience has continued into my personal and illustrative work dealing with perception, memory, and mental deterioration that can strike any of us at anytime.

From the country that’s home to some of the ‘worlds weirdest hotels’ comes the latest in luxury tourist attractions: The Mirrorcube. Located 60 kilometres south of the Arctic circle, in Harads, Sweden, this stunning hide-out, designed by Tham & Videgard architects, is made of light-weight aluminum which is hung around the base of a single tree.

The exterior is camouflaged by mirror walls that reflect their surroundings while the interior is plywood. The windows offer 360 degree views, but to prevent birds from flying into them, an infrared film, visible only to birds, is laminated into the glass panels. The Mirrorcube can accommodate two people and includes a large bed, a small kitchenette and bath, a living room and roof terrace. It’s not cheap – $592 dollars a night, per person. If Sweden’s not your thing, you can have your own Mirrorcube delivered and constructed at your desired destination.

Tom Fruinis a Brooklyn artist who just completed HOTEL, a new sculptural work made from colorful scavenged signage collected from all corners of the city over the past two decades and fronted by four-stroke red neon. The signs are made with hand-printed fruit and pizza, air conditioner repair advertisements, warnings, and phone numbers, all found in demolished pizzerias in DUMBO and in old warehouses on the Bowery. It’s a 50 foot tall marquee on the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Fancy being part of an art installation while staying in a funky albeit minimally furnished room in the heart of Berlin? Hotel Minimal, is a pop-up one-room hotel from the Linie project that explores the concept of public and private space. Guests just have to be comfortable being on view in a large shop front on one of the main thoroughfares of the trendy Mitte district.

A minimalist design hotel parked on Thailand’s Koh Samui island, The Library stole my attention as I wandered down Chewang Beach at sunset. It wasn’t the red pool contrasted with the white minimalist studios that held my gaze, but the rather well-stocked design library brimming with Warhol and architecture titles from across the globe. A collection of slick iMacs wait patiently beside the bookshelves, and minimalist lounges encourage readers to stay a while and learn the history of design. While it’s a little beyond the reach of this hostel-dwelling backpacker, The Library promises a stimulating stay for those with an appreciation of aesthetics.
