Horst Friedrichs was born in Frankfurt and studied at the Munich Academy of Photography. His book, 20th-Century Mods, follows the contemporary British Mod scene. We asked him how he first became interested in it: ‘In the 80s, my friends in Germany were Mods so when I moved to London 1997, I was curious about the Mod scene in the UK. After a bit of research, I discovered The New Untouchables, sophisticated and stylish Mod people who share a true love of quality vintage and 60s music. Shortstack are a Washington DC band that not many people know about outside of the the city. They recently released an EP of covers with some sweet choices on there — The Kinks, Captain Beefheart, and The Pupils, among others. Once again a band takes different styles, sounds, and time periods, and owns it like an extra finger.

We used to depend on sundials back in the day, but now there are multiple ways to tell the time. And Tokyo Flash has just invented another one. Based on LED technology, these watches are not only stylish but futuristic and wildly innovative. They even have a watch from minimalist designer Naoto Fukasawa that is more than just your basic timepiece. The Tokyo Flash site says that their watches are supposed to ‘resemble the various moods of a human’, and they’re definitely an attention grabber. These are watches to take us right through to the 22nd century.
