WE'RE THINKING

As a five year resident of New York, I often wonder about the changing face of the city and how much of the character has been stripped away. This atmospheric series of photos from the How To Be A Retronaut website have me pining for a less sanitised New York, when the old school charms and sensibilities were still intact. Remarkably, over the ‘eight years it took James and Karla Murray to complete this project, one third of the stores they featured have closed’. Sad. Read more

Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.

WE'RE TRAVELLING TO

Only in Japan? Well, maybe. Though Oklahoma may be a close second on the radar. Apparently, in this time of recession, Japanese men have taken rather fondly to inanimate objects rather than the real thing as a less expensive way to, err, fulfill their needs. Lisa Fiore’s work is subtlety conceptualized and incredibly painted, offering a calm, clean and neatly designed image, while also possessing haunting, conceptual ideas. She works within still life and landscape narrative. Read more

WE'RE LISTENING TO

Lush was one of the best bands to come out of the indie-tastic early ’90s. They set the standard for shoegazey, ethereal pop from the British Isles, and they were about to break big with their 1996 album Lovelife before drummer Chris Acland hanged himself in his parents’ home. The band is a bit of a forgotten gem at this point. Let’s cross our fingers for a reunion.
