Nicole Hughes Contributor

By Nicole Hughes in New Trends on Saturday 15 November 2014

So, hipster mathematician Jonathan Touboul just published a paper titled, The hipster effect: When anticonformists all look the same – attempting to explain via math why hipsters end up looking the same.

An illegible menu! Seriously, what will they stink of next?

Jonathan Leeming Contributor

By Jonathan Leeming in New Food and Packaging on Thursday 24 July 2014

I’m lucky enough to live and work between Darlinghurst and Surry Hills, among the hippest and most desirable parts of Sydney. But I have to say, I’ve had just about enough of this ‘hipster’ craze, where everything either has holes in it, has been deconstructed, is worn super-loose or ultra-tight (I can never get it […]

These are the world’s most obsessive album collectors

Rachel Oakley Contributor

By Rachel Oakley in New Photography on Friday 30 May 2014

A few years ago, I accidentally sold six Beatles records (in mint condition) for $1 each at a garage sale. I’ve always wondered what might’ve happened had I not sold them, along with all the other records I sold that day. Maybe I’d have a gigantic vinyl collection. Maybe, just maybe, I’d have a record […]

Asheville Blog: an east coast, online version of Portlandia

Drunken Prayer Reader Find

By Drunken Prayer in Cool Websites on Wednesday 27 March 2013

Asheville is a ridiculous little Appalachian Mountain town in Western North Carolina. This website is a hilarious on-going compilation of gifs specific to life there. This site reminds me of the show Portlandia; you don’t have to live there to be in on the joke. Anyone who’s ever spent time in a hip oasis town […]

Unpretentiousil: the cure for the common ‘HIPSTER’

Annie Churdar Contributor

By Annie Churdar in Video on Monday 4 March 2013

Do you find yourself struggling to fight apathy, the desire to be vegan, and the need to put a mustache or bird on everything? Have you lost your drive? Are you chronically unhygienic? Do you have the urge to take frequent trips to the Apple store? Do you experience turrets-like symptoms of constantly babbling about […]

Hipster dads get their own mag

Low Lai Chow Contributor

By Low Lai Chow in New Design on Wednesday 6 February 2013

Paper Mag pointed us to Kindling Quarterly, a new magazine that celebrates fatherhood and hipster dads, with a comment that it’s ‘kind of cute and very well designed, even if it’s laughably Brooklyn (e.g., every dad pictured has facial hair and is sporting flannels and/or Steven Alan sweaters)’. Hmm, ukeleles, warm portraits lit by natural daylight, whimsical homes… yep, very hipster indeed — and gorgeous too.

Hipster literature flow chart

Low Lai Chow Contributor

By Low Lai Chow in New Trends on Friday 30 November 2012

Hipster readers, Goodreads has just the thing for you if you can’t think of what to read. The tricky thing is that you have to read David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest before you can get any book recommendations at all. Then again, you can be ironic. Who says you have to be honest?

As an exercise in logo examination, I re-branded popular animated shows from the twentieth century as they would look if designed to market themselves as a hipster fashion label.

By Low Lai Chow in New Design on Saturday 28 April 2012

These vintage ads for hygiene products from the seventies and sixties seem to target hipsters of today in a way that’s quite uncannily spot on.

Air New Zealand Presents: The Hipster

Lost At E Minor Contributor

When it comes to being a hipster, Australian Patrick ticks all the boxes. He is a skinny white boy living in the hood (well, Redfern, Sydney). He’s a part-time DJ, full-time social photographer, and the wearer of ironic T-shirts and ironic shorts. He’s the bearer of ironic tattoos and the rider of an ironic bicycle. Advertisement

Unique tote bags from Ibiza

Contributions Reader Find

By Monja Black in New Fashion on Tuesday 3 January 2012

On my last trip to the beautiful party island of Ibiza last summer, I discovered a label named Bonk Ibiza which represents handmade bags. This version of tote bag is by far the most stylish and unique I’ve seen. The special thing about it is that it’s not only the specific print, but also the braided carriers: powerful fluoro colors make it innovative and desirable. So far these bags are available only in Ibiza’s clothing store, More, but they can now be ordered online as well.

Ultimate Fanj is a new comedy web series that has been selected as a finalist in the Movie Extra Webfest competition. Hipsters on Food Stamps

Gerry Mak Reader Find

By Gerry Mak in New Events on Thursday 18 March 2010

Heeb magazine founder Jennifer Bleyer recently interviewed me for an article about young creative types on food stamps. The editors at Salon.com decided that I am a hipster. I don’t really know what that means. Judging by the comments that the article generated, I’m some sort of lazy bum who can’t give up my artisinal chevre. I don’t need to go into detail defending my food choices, but all I’d like to say is that I try to buy healthy foods at the lowest prices. I never eat out. I love to cook, and I really need to control what goes into my food, so I cook every meal for myself. I often share with friends. I want to be healthy and I want my friends to be healthy because none of us have health care.
