Survival Tactics is the first Australian Hip Hop feature film. It’s directed by multi-talented Hip Hop artist Morganics and will be dropping soon. The freshest Bboys, Bgirls, free runners, DJs, MCs, spoken word, graffiti and street artists explode on screen. I helped out on set as production assistant and I was also an extra in one of the scenes. It was an exciting project to be a part of. The plot is simple: released early from jail, Aboriginal street musician, Jet (Wire MC), attempts to reunite with his girlfriend, emerging young Hip Hop dancer, Rosa (Demi Sorono). While he was in lockup, Jet’s best mate Fury (Morganics) has spiralled into homelessness and drug addiction, scoring from Jet’s rival, DJ Rich (Bboy Jay). Now their rivalry comes to a head when he discovers that Rosa has been rehearsing with DJ Rich to host his upcoming all star Hip Hop jam.

‘We believe this story is too important to go untold!’ Rubble Kings is a feature length documentary by Shan Nicholson about the New York city street gangs of the late ‘60s & ‘70s and their influence on hip-hop. From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled New York City. Beyond the idealistic hopes of the civil rights movement lay an unfocused rage. Neither law enforcement nor social agency could end the escalating bloodshed.

Peace came only through the most unlikely events that would change the world for generations to come by giving birth to hip-hop. Rubble Kings is a film about courage, hope and survival against all odds, even in the harshest of circumstances. The message is especially relevant today, a time when gang related deaths are at an all time high among inner city youths. The film’s most important goal is to touch and inspire today’s at-risk youth. Independent and self-funded, Rubble Kings needs your help so if you find that you would love to see this film completed, you can back it here

This collection was recently updated with the Beastie Boys signed one ’5 Boroughs’ deck, done before MCA’s passing.

Cam and myself started writing songs together in 2009. We released an album that same year entitled The 13. It was a Hip Hop record, but spread across many genres, such as dance and electro. We set out to make club bangers that would thump on the dance-floor. With the addition of Adam and Aidan, the creative direction and sound has changed quite a bit. Adam’s vocals have an erry indie edge and Aidan’s live drums rock the shit out of the show. I love it. We have an EP set for release in August.

As a fan of Hip Hop who grew up in the 80s, it’s sometimes difficult to reconcile with what the genre has recently become. Few and far between are the artists who continually attempt to push the art form toward its next iteration. But they do still exist. Most recently, I’ve become enamored with the Seattle duo known as Shabazz Palaces. I think their label, Sub Pop, says it best when they say: ‘If Bedouins herded beats instead of goats and settled in Seattle instead of the Atlas Mountains, this would be their music’.

I was like, ‘what?’. Turns out that he’s my type of MC. At the end of 2011, he dropped a music video for a song called GemStar off of his recently released VLNS NVR DIE album. Very ’90s inspired Hip-Hop; reminds me of Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang if they were merged into like one person or something. Needless to say that he’s dope.
