You could argue that Hickory Mertsching isn’t keeping up with modern trends, but since man scribbled bulls on the walls in Lascaux, we as a species appreciate good draughtsmanship.

If Mertsching stopped at skill, he’d get by on attractive paintings. But to his credit, he’s got more up his sleeve. One might call it a vision. The detritus of his native Oregon – oil cans and cola bottles, chainsaws and radiators – slammed against a child’s wind-up car, on top of an elk skull, with a perched crow. It’s all pretty great and unsettling (you’re gonna die, but random stuff lives on).
