Queensland’s Heron Island

I’ve just returned from a well earned holiday at Heron Island, a natural coral cay off the coast of Queensland. We arrived after a two hour boat trip from Gladstone, and departed with a 30 minute helicopter trip. We walked around the island most days, the trip taking a leisurely fifteen minutes.

It’s midwinter in Sydney and I’m getting over my third or fourth cold. I need a holiday. And Heron Island, 72km off North Queensland, is booked in to do the trick. Located on a coral cay, there’s diving from your door, and as it’s a protected habitat, there’s a wide array of wildlife ā€” including nesting turtles and an abundance of Australian birdlife. I’m counting the days.
