Everyone and their moms sent me this heavy metal flow chart. Yep, I like metal, which is why I’m going to knitpick about some annoying things about this. I know this is supposed to be funny, but The Darkness is not a metal band. In fact, for me this would be ten times funnier if they had excluded hair and nu metal bands. There are so many funnier band names in real metal that referencing Whitesnake or Skid Row just seems like wasted opportunity to really lampoon the genre. Also, where’s the Tolkien references? After satanism and paganism, no mythology has influenced metal as much as that of Middle Earth. The chart even has some factual mistakes: Ragnarok is from Norse mythology, not the Book of Revelations. Anyway, Doogie Horner, the funnyman behind this chart, doesn’t sound like he actually knows enough about metal to properly make fun of it. Or maybe I’m just too dorky to laugh.
There’s a lot I could say about South African artist Robin Rhode. But to simply say that he’s endlessly cool pretty much sums it up. In fact, he’s so cool that Nike’s been accused of ripping off one of his pieces for a television ad (can you say plagiarism: just don’t do it?) Read more

San Francisco-based illustrator Luke Feldman has just had his first children’s book published, Chaff n’ Skaffs: Mai and the Lost Moskivvy, a collaboration with writer Amanda Chin. The book artfully tells the story of Mai, ‘a young girl who never ventured too far from her home. When a lost mosquito interrupts Mai’s sleep, her friend Chaff suggests they escort Moskivvy back home to a faraway land. So begins a courageous girl’s voyage into a fantastic world’, all communicated beautifully through Feldman’s colorful, dynamic and considered illustrations. Read more
Pre-eminent Norwegian Viking metal band Enslaved has evolved over the years from a straight-forward black metal band into a moody, post-rock outfit without completely abandoning their roots. Their last few albums have seen a shift towards English lyrics, sweeping and majestic instrumentals, and diverse influences — everything from Pink Floyd and ’70s prog and psych rock to ’80s goth and shoegaze pop.
