You know those days when you’re sitting on the train after a hard day at work, literally unable to pull your phone from your pocket to change the song you’re listening to? Those days are over. Well, sort of. Japanese company Neurowear have developed a set of headphones and an iPhone application which combine to read your brainwaves and deliver music to suit your mood. All hands free, of course. The headphones even have built-in LED indicators which show your mood to those around you. I guess they know you get a bit touchy when you’re stressed.

In celebration of this development, here are my favourite songs for different moods:
Happy: Grouplove – Tongue Tied
Sad: Cat Power – Say
Stressed: Bon Iver – Perth
Angry: Death Grips – Thru The Walls
Sleepy: Patrick Watson – Advenutres In Your Own Backyard
Focused: Chopin – Nocturnes: No. 2 in E Flat Major, Op. 9
Excited: John Roman – Sala
Unable To Sleep: Burial – South London Boroughs

Logitech’s UE 4000 Headphones are a cheap, compact and durable alternative to generic in-ear buds. When I compared the two, the UE 4000′s won out with a fuller sound and provided me with a far more comfortable experience; they are beautifully padded.

The on-ear headphones have a built in microphone and Bluetooth capability – which made them the ultimate companion for my smartphone. Devices can be controlled via buttons on the headphones, and there’s the backup wired option for when you want to be connected to your device. For me, the Bluetooth capabilities were exceptionally helpful as I could connect my phone and than walk away from it without having to worry.

The sound provided by the UE 4000′s was definitely better then my ear buds but the bass did feel a little muddy at times. The exceptional treble tones and the more comfortable fit of the 4000′s completely made up for the bass issue and they were the clear winners.

The headphones feel durable and robust which makes them travel handy, and a carry pouch protects them on the go. Fairly priced for a more premium experience, the UE 4000 Headphones are a great solution for active, on the go people who want to enjoy superior sound quality for music and conversations through a durable and compact device. The perfect alternative to ear buds? I think so…

Logitech have just released an amazing new range of audio solutions called Ultimate Ears, and with that line comes their show stopping headphones: the Logitech UE 9000.

Constructed from metal and TR90 materials (plastic titanium), the headphones are solid and sturdy yet fold up to be compact when you’re short on space. They work wirelessly through a Bluetooth connection so you have the freedom to move up to 15m from your device, but they can still be wired to save on battery consumption.

With a built in mic and music controls, the UE 9000 Headphones are a perfect companion to any smartphone or tablet. You can take calls, chat on Skype and listen to music privately; perfect for those embarrassing musical indulgences. Did someone say show tunes?

Of course, the headphones produce superior sound with tight lows and soaring highs; a perfect balance for any genre (trust us, we’ve put them through their paces!) Over ear noise cancelling filters are built in which allows for perfect and clear sound everywhere you go, from busy city streets to noisy flights.

Check out our picks for the best 5 songs we loved listening to:

Interestingly, the idea for these headphones was inspired by the theory that dementia could be treated by music therapy. Designer Kirsten Black, whose grandma lived in a nursing home, said: ‘Nan had dementia and because music is recognised by a part of the brain that is so primal, it could give her a sense of familiarity and security in an increasingly unfamiliar and hostile environment. Looking at headphones available, none could be used in the nursing home environment’. Halo are small, soft, hi-fidelity speakers that fit inside a customised headband, surely soon to be every jogger-music fan’s dream accessory.

These small but innovative in-ear headphones from Audio-Technica are part of a new wave of noise canceling buds that claim to block up to 85 to 90 percent of outside sound. They offer a nice blend of ultra-portability and compact tight sound. Their frequency response is awesome, with no sound leakage, though there does seem to be an issue with the treble range and it comes with an inconvenient cord length. Nonetheless, these little things are very useful when traveling.
