I love this image by Rhea Garen because of the mix of reality and fantasy. The scene of a small cottage-like house in the woods immediately brings me back to some of my favorite childhood stories, like Hansel and Gretel or Sleeping Beauty. I feel like this could have been the woodcutter’s home, or the hide-out where Sleeping Beauty was taken by the three fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merriweather. There is a certain whimsy yet depth, candor yet mystery, all present in this one shot.

Walking down Toronto’s Queen Street West a few weeks back, we were momentarily distracted (if an hour or two counts as momentarily) by the cake-y delicacies that adorned the store window of The Red Tea Box. Oh boy! This place is like that scene out of Hansel and Gretel where they stumble upon the Gingerbread House, only the treats here are Tea Cakes and the decorations on them should probably be hanging on the walls of a local gallery. Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
This is the greatest invention. Ever. Commuters in South Korea can now do their grocery shopping whilst waiting for the train to arrive using their mobile phone to scan the QR codes of the virtual goodies they want. I really, really love this blog. Renee Ruin covers art, fashion, trends, with an emphasis on tattoo, fetish and grunge culture and she digs up the most amazing stuff. Ruin seems to like the same artists I do, including the seriously talented Brian M. Viveros.
Whitest Boy Alive follow their own rules: no overdubs, no FX, and the music is always recorded live in one take. Fronted by Erlend Øye (of Kings Of Convenience notoriety), the Berlin collective produce a distinctive blend of minimalist melodies and pillowy grooves. Chicago artist Ellen Greene makes leather gloves with ‘tattoos’ on them, that is she paints old-school sailor tattoos onto them. They’re pretty cool. Read more
