#firstworldproblems is a popular hashtag that’s never quite gone out of fashion on Twitter. The whining is all meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek in a ‘poor me, but I’m not really suffering’ way. So when DDB New York got Haitians to stand around in their spartan surroundings and read out first world problems in a video commercial, it brilliantly put everything in context. No wonder then, that the clip — made to promote awareness for Haitian charity WATERisLIFE — has gone viral.

A good friend brought my attention to this impressive little video, and I’m very thankful he did. As children of the digital-creative age, it’s so easy for us to become wrapped up in music videos, high art, fashion and what not. I find it refreshing to be reminded of the wider world. And if a video can achieve that with beautiful cinematography and music, so much the better.

Matt LaFontaine presents us with a succinct chronicle of what no doubt was a large and impressive undertaking. Nine people travelled from their homes in Canada solely to provide the little bit of aid they could to the impoverished and earthquake stricken nation of Haiti. One would expect a sombre, in your face struggle. But, instead, we’re presented with a joyful documentation, a message of hope, companionship and humanity.

Wyatt Gallery is a person, not a place. I met Wyatt almost eight years ago through an ex-girlfriend. Since then, we have traveled all over the planet, photographing things (mostly natural disasters) together. Our first trip was to Sri Lanka in 2004 in the weeks following the Tsunami. Our most recent trip was just a few weeks ago when we went to Haiti.

Wyatt also did a great series of photographs in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Wyatt is a master at shooting landscape and architectural photography (two practices that few of our generation dabble in). Wyatt has also won just about every award that a professional photographer can win, including the PDN 30 award and a Fulbright grant.
