Commenting on the Chinese overtaking of the American empire, Guy Laramee’s The Great Wall series consists of dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other books that he painstakingly carves into Chinese landscapes.
Interdisciplinary artist Guy Laramee carves amazing landscapes from books that are slowly falling apart, such as old encyclopedias and dictionaries. His premise is that knowledge could well erode instead of build: ‘Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are – mountains. They erode a bit, they flatten and and become fields where apparently nothing is happening’.
