Record label Sublime Frequencies, which specializes in obscure recordings from Syria, Indonesia, Thailand, Mali, Nepal, and beyond, has been releasing solid discs such as one of my favorite albums, Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk & Pop music Vol. 1, a collection of pre-Khmer Rouge pop. The label now has its first vinyl offering, a limited, 1000-copy pressing of an album by Group Doueh, Guitar Music from the Western Sahara. If you like this, also check out the CD by Group Bombino, a band that plays driving, rowdy, Tuareg blues.

I’ve always been an avid follower of the Comfort Station brand in Cheshire St, London, so I decided to pop in on Sunday to have a look at their new collection. It’s unique and different, featuring railway tracks and my favourite barometer necklaces, where you can rate the way you, or someone you’ve just met, is feeling, with indications of stormy, fair and excellent.

A Chicken Growing Up! is a great blog on which science illustrator Mieke Roth posts one ink drawing a week of a chicken as it matures. Read more

I’m really liking the style of Natsko Seki. I like the scale she uses, the surrealism, the playfulness and textures. It looks fresh and you can keep looking at her work and finding more in it the longer you look at it. Read more

The Liars were in the Netherlands recently and we came across some kids doing this dance. It’s really bizarre to watch. Read more

One of my favourite venues in New York is Brooklyn’s Union Hall, right around the corner from Tamari, a super sushi joint. Upstairs they have two massive fireplaces burning and a bocce ball court. Yup, bocce. Downstairs you feel like you’ve walked into the museum of natural history where you can see live bands on a stage reminiscent of grandma’s living room.

Lyon-based Babylon Circus is music laced with ska, gypsy, rock, vaudevillian antics, dancehall and reggae. Their first Australian East Coast tour in 2008 saw the nine piece band sell every show out. They feature on the So Frenchy So Chic compilation. We asked them to tell us about their favourite music right now, and they started with Django Reinhardt’s Minor Swing [listen below]: ‘Backstage, home, in the bus, cooking or having breakfast, is there a time you wouldn’t love to hear this one? We love it anytime, any style, too, as it’s been remixed and rearranged so many different ways. Still, we love the original best’. Read the rest of Babylon Circus’ Secret Playlist.

Kate Banazi’s silkscreen artwork

A three-lettered ‘wow’ explodes in my mind whenever I look at the work of Sydney-based silkscreen artist Kate Banazi. Her latest work is fantastically dynamic, stylistic and abstract, making clever use of colour-bomb palettes. Read more

Kris Kuksi

Good thing Kris Kuksi channelled the trauma of growing up with an alcoholic stepfather, his disdain for ‘the typical American life and pop culture’, and his fascination with the macabre into obsessive, baroque assemblages, paintings, and drawings. Read more

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
