More than 100 of the world’s most exciting and influential artists, illustrators and designers including Oliver Hibert, Tatiana Arocha, Insa, Stanley Chow, Kai and Sunny and Pete Fowler have taken a paper dog and made it their own as part of the two-year Gerald Project. Culminating in an exhibition currently at New York Design Week, the collaborative sculpture exchange is one of the most ambitious in the history of art and design.

Stood on four legs with his nose proudly pointed to the air, Gerald really is a dog like no other. Designed by British design house, Lazerian, the free standing model of a Bracco Italiano breed of gun dog made entirely of paper uses up to 88 individual components for each large format dog. His construction is a prime example great design giving strength and grace to the most unlikely and underappreciated of materials. Joining Lazerian to celebrate the completion of the project is James Cropper, the 170 year old British paper mill who will use their publishing experience to create a high quality, limited edition, large format hardback book featuring all 120 of the paper dogs alongside artist reflections on what the project and Gerald means to them.

It’s amazing what kind of bold faced lies come out of designer’s mouths. Call it designer slang, jargon, or terms of the trade, but we all know it’s bullshit. This is a comprehensive collection of only the best design jargon bullshit. It’s a good laugh if nothing else. One of my favorites is the ridiculous phrase used to sell the Instagram logo. The blog describes itself with this phrase: ‘This blog ensures focus and consensus whilst encouraging maximum creative flexibility across multiple touchpoints’. It’s just more jargon bullshit from the masters themselves.

This cute animal alphabet by Mat Mabe puts a modern spin on the age-old tradition of teaching children their letters with the help of little pictures. You can spot a Petting Zoo poster a mile off: fine forms and tasty shapes, delightful restarint and hefty usage of animals. I love the angles and how they maximise the inherent roughness that screenprinting has if you let it. They’ve made countless gig posters for all kinds of bands that really stand out from the standard fare, and from Brighton to boot. Hurrah.

Imagine getting this VIP ticket holder package in the mail. It has your ticket and poster. But the poster is a mask and a graffiti stencil. The info booklet is also a stencil and totally interactive. And the grenade shaped box even comes complete with a surprise ”jumping-snack-in-a-can prank” to get you in the right mood. With this package, the goal was to stay true to the youthful, urban, DIY roots of the “surprise festival” while simultaneously going overboard in every way possible.

This package plus another book I made both won Gold at the District 3 Regional ADDY awards this year. We’ll see if the national judges agree this summer.

Wu Yimeng is a graphic designer from Berlin who works on book layouts and print for cultural events. Having been in Paris and Berlin after growing up in Shanghai, her rich cultural background blends elegant Chinese tradition with real and digital paint. Her work feels well-balanced, light and playful. Her series of posters for the Berlin Confucius Insitute – the Chinese Cultural center – is remarkable for its theme and approach: objects of daily life bring a visual warmth while standing there without people around.

My friends recently set up a platform for collaborative graphic design around the globe. It comes with a suitably kickass format: basically, its themed exchange rounds bring a slamming alliance of five graphic designers together every month, who them proceed to rewarp each other’s designs. OuterEdit will launch only on July 17 this year, but a secret collaboration themed ‘Muzik Mish Mash’ is now impatiently underway among Jonathan Yuen, Ellie See, Driv Loo, Gino Woo and Momorobo (unlock this one at the OuterEdit site via a password hidden on their Facebook page.
