The new Gorillaz video, On Melancholy Hill, is a rad combo of 2D and 3D animation and video, with cameos from Lou Reed and Snoop Dogg. Damn this is good.

From 2000 to 2006, director Ceri Levy filmed behind the scenes alongside the Gorillaz creators, from first drawings, animations, music and the musicians, through to the faces behind the voices of Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Bananaz also has appearances from many of those who occasionally pass through the virtual band: Dennis Hopper, De la Soul, Ibrahim Ferrer, Dangermouse, Dan the Automator, D12, Bootie Brown and Neneh Cherry. The result, Bananaz, is a free-wheeling documentary, taking down the virtual walls of Gorillaz in an intimate, honest and often hilarious account of the working relationship between Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and their extraordinary creative process.

Here’s some cute, doll-eyed portraits by Toronto-based illustrator Inkyung Choi that pay homage to the Impressionists. The singer in my band, Yoshiko, does a very disturbing impression of a beaver. We call it her ‘beaver face.’ It looks a little bit like Choi’s paintings. Read more

Oh, ok, so now I’ve seen it all. Or perhaps, in this case, I’m not seeing enough. Japanese game shows are so much fun. Seriously.

It was $150, but worth every penny with its mind-blowing works of art by Katsushika Hokusai from cover to cover’

The Sound of Animals Fighting again unleash their experimental blend of progressive electronic hardcore rock. Known only by their animal names — Nightingale, Walrus, Lynx, and Skunk — and wearing masks for their rare live appearances, TSOAF have released two albums. Their latest, The Ocean and The Sun, offers an intense mix of genres, as delicate Brazilian-inflected melodies careen into shattering guitar workouts.

I love the new range of plaid collared shirts from the aptly named Just Another Cheap Shirt,. When I walked into their showroom in Manhattan a few weeks back, my eyes nearly popped out of head at the sight of so many colours across so many shirts across so much space. It’s a vibrant, resilient, and timeless collection — edgy street wear meets classic European sophistication. Read more

Pencils made from recycled newspaper

The problem with awesome things like these pencils made out of recycled newspaper is that you almost don’t want to use them.
