Technology is making us smart, and becoming smart at the same time. At its annual worldwide developers’ conference in San Francisco this week, Google revealed new features — such as making search query results even more complete by including answers to the most common follow-up search queries from the first search. Certainly sounds like Google is trying to read our minds with all that data it has amassed from its huge user base across its many sites and services. How good will it be? We’ll just have to find out when they roll it out.

Google recently announced on their blog that they’ve been working with the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA and TIME to release compilations of Earth images taken from space for the interactive Timelapse project.

These compiled images include Lake Urmia drying up, Las Vegas’ urban growth, Dubai’s coastal expansion with its Palm Islands, Alaska’s Columbia Glacier retreat and the Brazilian Amazon deforestation. It’s amazing to see just how much the face of Earth has changed in the span of just three decades because of us people everywhere.

Yep, we here at Lost At E Minor said years ago that mega-repository of all knowledge in the world, Google, was surely becoming our collective brain. Now the documentary Google and the World Brain is out, and it looks at Google’s ambitious plan in 2002 to scan every single book in the world.

It’s everywhere. We’ve all seen it before. It’s absolutely infuriating if we’re being completely honest. That stupid “broken image” icon always pops up when my Internet is too weak to load a full page from Google. Hey, but what if Google helped give the iconic image a more positive connotation? What if it were used everywhere? I’m talking hipster pins and cross stitch art and custom icons for different cities. Nice one, Google.

Dang, Google has done it again with their latest Chrome experiment. The World Wide Maze basically lets anyone transform their favorite website into a 3D maze on a computer or mobile device — and then play with it. It gets pretty laggy, but it’s also pretty darn cool.

We, humans, are always looking for answers. It makes sense that we are now looking towards search engines for answers to everything. SEOLOL, which combines the two acronyms for ‘search engine optimization’ and ‘laugh out loud’, showcases real search queries from us all. Unfortunately the site hasn’t been updated for over a year, though it’s reassuring to know that ridiculosity is timeless. Some of us will always be way ahead of our time googling things like ‘Want To Fight Chucky Cheese’, ‘Hitler’s Magical Powers’ and ‘Can A Horse Have OCD?’, and then being found out and laughed at.

Excuse us while we get completely geeky about this. A side-project by the duo leading Google’s Big Picture visualization research group, Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viegas, Wind Map shows you the delicate tracery of wind flowing over the US’ by visually mapping out the land in real time according to the strength of the wind currents sweeping over it, making it look like a living, breathing creature in the meantime. Fascinating.

Know ‘people who find it more convenient to bother you with their question rather than google it for themselves’? When you enter the query on their behalf at the Let Me Google That For You site, it generates a video tutorial showing the obvious instructions to search that query on Google, then lets you share that via an easy copy-and-paste link. You know what they say: teach a man to fish and he’ll fish for life. Teach him to use Google and he might no longer use you as a Google helpline for all his burning questions.

Artist Jon Rafman has been scouring the amazing world of Google Street View and has found more then a few oddly funny situations; including everything from cars on fire to scary men in masks. Getting captured by a Google photographer seems like a task in itself, even more so when you’re hiding behind a bin.

As a pre-pubertarian kid, I had a strong passion for urbanism. I used to draw detailed city maps, sometimes including subway systems and contour lines. And when the original SimCity came out, I was in heaven. More than 20 years later and living in one of the most poorly designed urban centers in the world, I’ve given up on this career choice. So, with all that mind, this is a neat and interesting video utilizing Google Earth and the weird visual glitches that populate it.

Ah, Google Glass. While this snazzy piece of head-mounted augmented reality isn’t available to us plebians yet, Google has been teasing everyone’s imagination here and there, including demo-ing the glasses with skydiving and the such. More recently, designer Diane Von Furstenberg and her models donned the $1,500 glasses for her Spring/Summer 2013 runway show at New York Fashion Week, a great immersive example of how unobtrusively Google Glass can go towards documenting life in this technological age. Take our money, Google, just take it.

Talk about making Star Trek look outdated. This incredible concept video imagines an amazing integration of technologies that really already exist into a seamless coexistence with the user. Everything that your iPhone or Android smartphone does, with an optical/audial and microphone interface that allows the wearer of these glasses to access the internet, GPS, email, FaceTime (or Skype, I suppose), camera and any number of other functions. Just imagine.

A new experimental online game is taking the Facebook experience to a whole new level. META Assassins, a tournament-based assassination game, makes use of a downloadable plugin to detect browser activity and, in turn, triggers shootouts when your assigned ‘target’ lands on the same page. This concept game also features real jobs, like Streetview Surveillance and Dead Drops, where real drops are placed in your city for a fellow player to retrieve in exchange for game cash.
