Funeral Moth are a weird funeral doom band from Japan with growly, death metal vocals. They’re slow. They’re heavy. They’re sun-extinguishingly dark. They’ve got weird atmospheric noises and really off-kilter song structures that meander like a half-dead prisoner shuffling about in a dungeon. Their current vocalist used to be in a grindcore band called Brob In June. Is there anything to not like about this band?

I can’t remember when or why I stumbled upon the work of UK-based photographer, Melinda Gibson, but I’m glad I did. There’s a real intimacy in her portrayal of space, captured between the silhouette of humans.

Located on West Houston, Alphaville is my favorite gift store in Manhattan. It offers a great selection of vintage objects, from Nixon’s campaign buttons, to Sesame Street 80s mobiles, 50s greeting cards and the original Mr. Potato Head and his friends. Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.
