Taking Surrealism back to its roots, Denver-based painter Christian Rex van Minnen, riffing on Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s sixteenth-century portrait heads composed of fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books. Van Minnen’s takes a less direct approach, playing with finely-rendered textures and abstracted but visceral components that suggest organs, skin, meat, crustaceans, and plant life, but also including more literal elements like flowers, clothing, leaves, and silhouettes. The artist’s use of dramatic, one-point lighting adds a depth and creepiness to his work, drawing out the grotesque forms and surfaces. Read more

Infinite Comic takes random Flickr images and pairs them with random Twitter tweets to create a comic. Users can type in search terms to look for related images and tweets for a more custom comic, but the results are still absurd and amusingly non-sensical.
Cambodian born photographer Frederic Chaubin is the editor of French magazine Citizen K. His photo series on bizarre buildings built in the former Soviet Union during the 1970s and 80s is absolutely fascinating. Read more

Well, today has been a great day and New Dandyism, the lovechild of a conglomate of lusty designers — Sons by Obedient Sons, wood wood and Call of the Wild — is the reason. In the wake of America’s historic presidential election, nearly two years of divisive campaigning, and eight years of a controversial administration, the nation is in desperate need of healing. Beloved Internet personality Ze Frank started From 58 to 42 with Love where contributors use their webcams to post messages reaching out to the side of the country that didn’t vote for their guy. It’s saccharine at times, and there are one or two borderline nasty posts from people that don’t seem completely onboard with the project’s objective. But overall, it’s pretty effective and moving. I’ll admit I needed a couple tissues while reading it.
Rarely is a film politically poignant as well as wonderfully written, acted and shot. The second feature from director Kimberly Peirce of Boys Don’t Cry was inspired by her brother, who joined the army, and was only possible after months of meticulous research. Read more
Casio Keyboard Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone are about to release a collection of remixes and covers their musical friends have recorded of songs found on their second album, The Bird Of Music. Titled Reverse Migration, the record features re-workings by Best Fwends, Teenagers, Darkel, and more. We caught up with them recently. Why and when did you decide to release a remix album? Annie: ‘Our friends were making so many wonderful versions of our songs we wanted to share them with the world’. How did you select the artists? Annie: ‘Mostly they were friends who told us they wanted to do remixes! Very fun and easy’. Reverse Migration is out November 11 through the band’s own label, Our Secret Record Company.
