Brian Dettmer uses outdated books, dictionaries and encyclopedias and carves them into incredible sculpture artworks.

With the help of knives, tweezers and surgical tools, he produces some of the finest book sculptures I have seen in a while. Dettmer is originally from Chicago, where he studied at Columbia College. He currently lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia.

What a shame we missed this one. The 14th Annual Summer Redneck Games — featuring hillbillies from across the south of America — were held recently in East Dublin, Georgia. And the standard of competition this year was particularly high in events that included the Armpit Serenade contest, Bobbin’ for Pigs Feet, and the Mud Pit Belly Flop. The Futurebirds are an unruly band of boys from Athens, Georgia, but they might as well have been reared in the backwoods of Woodstock by Levon Helm himself. Their debut release, Hampton’s Lullaby, is out on July 13 via Autumn Tone Records.

Athens, Georgia band, Pylon still sound unlike anything else out there. Georgia artist JTO celebrates wood, horror, and the 1970s in his work. Whether he’s sawing it into pieces to recombine as skulls or strange animals, or drawing sexy ladies, monsters, and arcade games on it with ink, JTO’s touch turns the most boring board into a fascinating object d’art. He also does a rad T-shirt graphic.

This Athens, Georgia-based trio Hola Halo provides enough catchy hooks, swing, and swagger to melt the most expertly-designed of igloos. On their recording Time Out Here, vocalist and keyboardist Shauna Greeson and her bandmates re-work fuzzy, ’70s-inspired love music. But don’t think they can’t play their pop music, too.

Athens, Georgia art rockers Circulatory System have delivered an extraordinary 46-minute album sculpted from five years worth of accumulated sonic experimentation. Signal Morning ricochets across every raw nerve from the poppiest of impulses to the edge of ostensible sanity, without revealing a single cut corner or uninspired change.

Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.

I love the bold colours and childlike themes in the illustrations of Atlanta, Georgia-based artist, Jessica Gonacha. It’s like Spring time all year round.
