Sparked is a new art and design collective directed by Geoffry Gertz collaborating with artists and illustrators to infuse their unique concepts and visions into well crafted ‘art products’. The debut Artist Series features the work of award winning illustrator and New York Times contributor Igor Kopelnitsky. Gertz created the boxed letterpress card set of eight humorous original designs crafted from Crane’s Lettra Letterpress re-purposed cotton paper. Each of Kopelnitsky’s designs are an unique and amusing commentary on issues ranging from energy independence to the evolution debate with themes and titles including Play Date With The Devil, Bright Idea, Heavy Thoughts, Don’t Be Shy, Balancing Act, Peace Out, Drill Baby Drill, and So Evolved. Australian illustrator Ken Taylor has created imagery for some of rock n’ ’roll’s great purveyors of sound, from the Rolling Stones and Queens of the Stone Age, to Nine Inch Nails and the Mars Volta. He has an easily recognizable style that screams sharp edge cool. Bold and bawdy, Taylor’s pieces use vivid colour to create a cut-out-comic-like feel reminiscent of old movie posters from the 1930s and 40s.
Just like Bluntcard, Sweet Perversion stationary cards provide a way to let a person know what you really think of them. Even if it’s bringing up something society frowns upon, like sleeping around or having genital lice. Go on, you know you really want to tell somebody what Jesus would do: he’d probably slap your face. Read more
Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
Herzog and de Meuron, the Swiss architects, have led the way with this re-use of the existing building fabric of CaixaForum in Madrid. Rather than being slavish to the existing openings, the building has been cut away for a contemporary practicality. We think this is an example of heritage not getting in the way of progress. Check out a similar concept of a previous post re-using the city fabric, where we were dreaming of such thing.
