According to these illustrations, we should all have a personal flying machine by now. Take a step back in time and see what society was expecting life to be like by the year 2000. Each vintage image is a time capsule of thought and culture that flavors each prediction with Victorian fashion. Some of these are kind of accurate, such as the Undersea Tourist Boat and Moving Sidewalks, but others are pretty far fetched. Though I haven’t seen any cities covered by a huge glass roof just yet.

‘The future is already here; it’s just not very evenly distributed’ (William Gibson). That quote comes to mind each time I visit Brenna Murphy’s ever-changing website. The Portland-based artist always seems to be a couple of steps ahead of the game. Her otherworldly hologram-like puzzles of marbelized baroque mandalas form an intertwining ecosystem that seems so near and yet so remote. Her art manages to spark an excitement of trying to discover and access her dense and rich digital environments, which I haven’t felt for a long time. Perhaps in a few years from now I’ll understand it. Until then, I remain amazed.

We all have a vision of what we think the future will look like. So what does the ever present growth of China mean for Westerners? That is the question China-based French photographer Benoit Cezard is trying to answer through his interesting and controversial series, China 2050. The series show Westerners performing a range of “blue collar” jobs that may currently be performed by poorer Chinese migrants – cleaners, construction workers and waiters are all included. Is this the future for the Western world?
