Every decade or so a prophet arrives, saying with one voice what millions together can’t manage. Dylan did it for the anti-war movement; Tupac for the ghetto; Cobain for the disaffected youth. There’s one sub-culture we all forget, however: the regular everyday normal people, so middle-of-the-road that you pass them week in week out without noticing. The sheer banality of this species renders them invisible. Yet their time has come: their Tupac, their Cobain, has finally arrived.

If anyone ever doubted the mutual harmony between pounding drum n’ bass and religious worship, here’s an example of a match made in, well, heaven. This video has me in absolute stitches every time I watch it, definitely one for the Desert Island clips. Stick a strobe light in there, pop a few Burberry caps on a few heads, and you’ve got a snapshot of a Saturday night in deepest, darkest London. Except, it’s middle America, and drugs are certainly off the menu.

You know that band you’ve always wanted to form, the one with the little-girl-lost singer with the mischevious eyes and the propulsive beats that drive bass hooks so catchy you want to bottle them up and sell them to Sting? That’s right, that fictional band that lingers just that little deeper in your imagination every time you saunter down Bedford Avenue, surrounded by girls in neon tights and guys in ruffed up converse. You know the one? Well, guess what, you’re too late. It’s arrived. It’s French. And it’s so damn good.
We checked in recently with one of our favorite illustrators — and Lost At E Minor contributor — Yuko Shimizu: — How’s 2008 started for you? ‘I was just in the French Riviera with eighteen other illustrators and designers. It was our annual New Year’s retreat. People from all over Europe and North America meet up and spend a week together, exchange information, go see things together, or just have fun. Peter Nalitch is Russia’s answer to Manu Chao. His video for the song Guitar is a Borat-like jab at low-budget, post-Soviet awkwardness — absurd English lyrics, Eurotrash earnestness, bad wipes, and cheap subtitles. But its tongue-in-cheekness is quite apparent, and the song is disarmingly catchy and romantic.
DJ Spooky — That Subliminal Kid — is just about the deepest crate digger around, trawling the barrels of long-lost record stores for choice vinyl to spin in his wickedly dubby sets. He gave us the inside word last week on his eight favourite songs right now via our sister website, My Secret Playlist. This is what he had to say about Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s Panic in Babylon: ‘If there’s anything that the twenty-first century has told us, it’s that dub is the real original hip-hop. People are always looking to push the boundaries of street art, perhaps fed up with seeing the same (wild) style of graffiti over and over again. So, like Blu and Dan Witz, Julian Beever came into our lives like a breath of fresh air. His work is stunning, mind-boggling stuff: he manages to create a world ‘inside’ a pavement with his 3D pastel illustrations, tricking the eye into believing a dimension exists right below our very feet. National Geographic just announced the Best Wild Animal Photos of 2008. They’re all stunning, but I’m particularly fond of the one of a frog refusing to become lunch for a snake. It looks like they’re eating each other. My number two is the black-crested macaque hanging out on a beach. Read more
