I’m totally on a huge doom metal kick lately, and Pantheist are one of the more interesting bands I’ve heard lately. Ostensibly a funeral doom band – meaning they play particularly slow and depressive metal – the London-based outfit from Belgium is not as harsh as most bands of this ilk, probably much to the chagrin of many metalheads. I am, however, a big fan of dramatic, theatrical music, so this floats my goat. The clean vocals, monk-like chanting, and occasional acoustic guitars are a nice contrast to the gothic organs, death-metal growls, and plodding pace that are usually associated with this genre.
In this rehashed age of flouro and 80s graphics, I was instantly in love with the simplicity of Emily Haines’ Knives Don’t Have Your Back artwork in neutrals with its nice typography. Read more
Sato Tokihiro is a Japanese photographer who creates light paintings to allude to a poetic vision of a chaotic world. He will open the shutter sometimes for more than two hours, using his large format camera to take us to another dimension. Read more
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
Formed in New York and now based in Rotterdam and Berlin, SMAQ is a collaborative studio for architecture and urbanism by architects Sabine Müller and Andreas Quednau. Here they have created an interesting installation called Bad (bath) in the Solitude Palace Gardens in Stuttgart with the premise of creating a usable sculpture which entwines a 1000 metre long garden hose throughout a timber structure. I really don’t understand cat haters. Most of them claim that our feline companions are aloof and distant, graceful and mysterious to a fault. In my opinion, cats are just as goofy as dogs, which is why any documentation of them acting like spazzes makes me chuckle uncontrollably. Read more
Haunts is one twisted, skewered, pulsating, gyrating disco tune. Seriously. Jacob Safari, aka Bark, Bark, Bark, sure knows how to take a dirgey chord progression and dress it up in layers of disjointed, unsettling noise.
This recent photo series by Joshua Scott combines gang sign stacking with cutting edge jewelry brands, nOir and Bijules. Who needs brass knuckles when you’ve got this much swag on your fists. Stack signs and represent your set with metal and mesh. Read more
