Radiation City is a Portland four-piece influenced by 60s bossa nova and girl group pop (with bite). Their debut album, The Hands That Take You, is coming out on Tender Loving Empire (Typhoon, Loch Lomond) on September 27.

Band members Cameron Spies and Lizzy Ellison came together through a series of creative collaborations, among them landscaping, cooking and photography. Being on the label side of things and getting sent a ton of music, they decided to try their hand at making their own. After only a few performances they started gaining attention as ‘one of Portland’s most polished and promising young acts’ (Willamette Week).

Our new EP is due to be released early October. It’s a five tracker, trying to capture the social struggles that I witness within our Western society. The songs challenge the faults in our education system, our addictions to medication, and mechanical uniform fashions, amongst many other things.

The single, Reasons for Moving On, will have a brand new video produced by the wonderful Richard Gorman. Again, we have produced this record entirely ourselves, in our DIY way, and are releasing it on our own homegrown label, Ouf Records.

Although performing on stage with the likes of Nicole Atkins, A.C. Newman (the New Pornographers), Parlor Mob, and Craig Wedren (Shudder to Think), Stephen Warwick is a musician most of us haven’t heard of. He hails from Charlotte, NC, one of the largest banking cities in the southeastern United States. Not the most likely of places for a musician to grow creatively.

But according to Warwick, there are a lot of great bands coming out of this area. He released his debut album, Talking Machine, at the end of last year and received Critic’s Pick for one of the top 10 album’s of 2010 in Shuffle magazine, a quarterly music zine based out of North Carolina.

The music is an amalgam of acoustic driven indie-rock, folk, and magic. Warwick’s words are puzzles that keep the listener piecing the stories together. He just recently released a new single entitled Werewolf and upon downloading it, I discovered a hidden song. A cover of the 1983 dance classic Let the Music Play by Shannon. Can’t get enough of him, and I think you’ll agree.

We love the new Mountain Goats video for their single Estate Sale Sign, which was directed by Brooklyn-based animation team Awesome and Modest: the video was made ‘using mixed media and handmade techniques to craft the eerie landscapes and anthropomorphic creatures at war over a snow globe’.

Yeeha! Another groundbreaking video from the best in the biz. For this latest effort, OK GO worked with director Trish Sie (who is the sister of lead singer Damian Kulash), the dance troupe Pilobolus, and the guys at Google to ‘create the latest HTML5 Chrome Experiment and musical experience. The project showcases the latest in modern browser technology, using 12 separate windows to create a kaleidoscopic dance that is partially choreographed by the viewer’. Enjoy!

Youn Sun Nah is not your typical jazz singer. Yes, being Korean does add to her unconventional appeal in the world of modern jazz. But what is really interesting about her is the way she uses her powerful voice.

Nah can go from a sweet slow tune like My Favorite Things and then take her voice in wild and unexpected directions like in her fantastic rendition of Metallica’s Enter Sandman. The result is a remarkable singer who brings a bit more kick to the world of modern jazz and actually looks like she’s having the time of her life while doing it.
