This French duo, Couboyz, consists of a graphic designer and a photographer. In this music video for the band, Husbands, there is little or no digital intervention, just a handbuilt set and some old-fashioned electronic wiring.

The 2013 So Frenchy So Chic compilation is a winner. Continuing the annual tradition, So Frenchy So Chic 2013 features everyone from Émilie Simon to Lou Doillon. I was even happily surprised by an appearance from Aussie local Julia Stone doing a beautiful duo version of Let’s Forget with the very French Benjamin Biolay. Invite your friends over, grab a bottle of wine, snack on some snails and chuck this on. Don’t forget the berets!

Set against playful vintage swing music and a backdrop of swirling color, L’écume des jours (or Mood Indigo in English) is a visually brilliant love story. From the looks of the trailer, the film is yet another artistic succes from the imagination of Michel Gondry, complete with unusual little gadgets, dreamy imagery, and all his usual little flourishes. The film will be released in France on April 25.

Fip is brilliant. It’s a French radio station that plays a wide but cohesive cross-section of music, focussing largely on jazz, world, reggae, soul, folk, and the like, as well the obligatory weird French pop and only minimal chat, which also happens to be very easy on the ears. Thanks to the internet, now everyone can hear it.

We love jelly as much as we love music, and now it appears we can have both in one. According to French designers Raphaël Pluvinage and Marianne Cauvard: ‘Noisy jelly is a game where the player has to cook and shape his own musical material, based on coloured jelly’. Somebody will have to make sure that these yummy instruments don’t get gobbled up before the music is done.

Three classic Jean-Luc Godard films re-imagined by contemporary French directing collective AB/CD/CD for Opening Ceremony, the super-cool NYC boutique. AB/CD/CD fully embrace the lo-fi conventions of earlier filmmakers, using dummies for stunt doubles as actors tumble down stairs and out of windows. We made this video for Toulousain musician, Pier Planas. His song, Elle Depense (‘She Spends’) is about our consumerist ways, using ‘the Cougar’ as an example. For the video, we wanted to take the message of the song to an extreme. That is, have our (very young) Cougars compete against each other for all the items in a boutique, until all that was left was Pier. Not surprisingly, it led to an all out no-holds-barred cat fight (or should that be a Cougar fight?)

I just returned from seeing Korkoro and I am a maelstrom of emotions. Its short, lush scenes tell a tense tale of gypsies in WWII France, but that narrative is drowned out by its intense cinematic poetry, with odes to running, joy, anxiety, nature, novelty, bewilderment, unfairness, kindness, and music that is in your bones as much as your ears. It is gorgeous.
