In my position as an editor of this website, I see a lot of new design work. It’s one of the perks of the job. That, and an endless supply of free CDs. But that’s another post altogether. Every day I’ll receive portfolio submissions from emerging and established designers from literally all corners of the globe, all looking for more attention for their work. What I’ve noticed in the past three years in particular is a dramatic increase in the number of people eking out a living as a designer. Part of this is down to the power of the Internet in making it easier for clients to find new designers to collaborate with. But there’s also little doubt that Chris Anderson’s Long Tail (a recognition that the internet has created a thriving market in which even small, niche players can enjoy a share) is in full swing.

A new idea has emerged in Norway that we think could be the precursor to things to come in the way our societies interact and develop. The general gradual demise of traditional gathering places such as town halls, community centers and churches has seemingly gone in hand with a generational shift and sharp increase in online virtual communities. Jules Kim is the designer behind the jewelery label Bijules, which is based out of New York. This entire accessory line including hairrings, using real and synthetic human hair. This collection called Haire allows you to clip on colored pieces and daring do’s without having to commit.
Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’

The pre-revolution artwork of Xiaoqing Ding
New York-based artist Xiaoqing Ding’s work draws from traditional Sung Dynasty scroll paintings as well as from more recent forms, her figures looking as much like the cherubic babies in festive Chinese New Year art (known as Nian Hua) as they do the sultry flappers in cigarette ads in 1930s Shanghai. Her images have an ethereal and slyly erotic quality, referencing Chinese mythology, pre-revolution film, and subtly personal narratives. Read more

Steve Schofield’s Land of the Free
In his series Land of the Free, photographer Steve Schofield captures geeky, cosplay fanatics in their own homes, sometimes with their costume-less family members. Two Klingons relaxing in a Middle-American living room as if waiting for grandma to serve cookies and tea makes for a truly compelling image. Schofield’s photos seem tense, as if halfway stuck between a mundane but warm reality and an exciting fantasy world. Read more
