In my position as an editor of this website, I see a lot of new design work. It’s one of the perks of the job. That, and an endless supply of free CDs. But that’s another post altogether. Every day I’ll receive portfolio submissions from emerging and established designers from literally all corners of the globe, all looking for more attention for their work. What I’ve noticed in the past three years in particular is a dramatic increase in the number of people eking out a living as a designer. Part of this is down to the power of the Internet in making it easier for clients to find new designers to collaborate with. But there’s also little doubt that Chris Anderson’s Long Tail (a recognition that the internet has created a thriving market in which even small, niche players can enjoy a share) is in full swing.

Riikka Sormunen’s paintings are stylised depictions of fantasy worlds. She also paints novelty figurines to immerse in these beautiful environments, where darkness seeps in, lending them unusual and thought-provoking qualities.

Not all dark, epic music has to be harsh. British songstress Rose Kemp builds operatic folk tunes that crescendo from acoustic, string-infused atmospherics into menacing, down-tuned heaviness, drawing as much from Neurosis as she does from PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, and even Massive Attack. Read more

Greg Brotherton creates his sculptures by transforming such common-place objects as vacuum cleaners, mixers and cars, into fantastic interpretations of myth and imagination. With an innate sense of structure and balance, Brotherton crafts surprisingly organic shapes using steel, glass and wood. The strength and fluidity that dominates both his figurative and abstract work is dictated by the process and evolves from a subconscious mechanistic state. Read more

On my recent visit to Barcelona, my love for Animal Farm led me to the Plaça de Geroge Orwell. There I discovered Oviso. The tiny café features hand painted walls and low wooden benches, where inhabitants enjoy great coffee for €1 and discuss music, beer, photography and the hordes of tourists that bustle just beyond the quiet square.

Damn, ten years of playing guitar in loud rock bands, and not once did we have a slamming moshpit like this. Banging heads is so, so fun.
