The sunny days are back as Spring begins to taste like Summer in Barcelona. Time to get ready for the Summer festival season, starting with Primavera Sound, the leading event (along with the Sonar Festival). This year’s edition includes more than 70 bands featuring big names like The Cure, Franz Ferdinand, Wilco, Justice and The Rapture (Björk cancelled a few days ago) and a perfect selection of leading indie artists like Beach House, Atlas Sound, Beirut, Grimes, The Walkmen, The XX, M83 to name a few.

Primavera Sound Festival stands as the leading event of the season taking place in a 73,800 square meter area with eight stages and side activities like PrimaveraPro, a platform to design new strategies for the music industry and offering free concerts in alternative spaces around Barcelona. For those away from the Mediterranean sea, Primavera will offer a live streaming of the festival through YouTube. Hank Schmidt in der Beek is an old friend from Munich. He is one of the funniest and brilliant young artists I know. I love his stuff. He makes you laugh, and if you’re ever lucky enough to spend a night out with him, you’ll be strutting through the streets singing songs at the top of your voice you never thought you knew.

I came across this music on our last tour of South America. After finding out about Ajuvaska, potatoes, and getting a bottle of coca leaf filled pisco-schnapps from a local witch, we spent a whole day in Lima in a record shop that was stuffed with this stuff.

Chicha is beautiful music and I’m always fascinated by countries that had their own record industry in the 60s and 70s: the psychedelic era. Too many didn’t. Peru is a fascinating country culturally and everyone should go. Beautiful music for summer.

Stewart Lee invited us to be his backing band last year in Edinburgh. Just for one song, but it was great and I’ve been to quite a few of his shows since. I’m in awe of how he twists the view point of the listener. His comedy goes with the scientific trend of parallel universes. Except, he can jump between the universes.
