Boys have had to way too easy for far too long. Back in the day, it was either budgie smugglers or a pair of knee-covering boardies. Not exactly a hard choice. The only problem is that no matter how many boardies you owned, they all produced the same look. A bit like Zoolander with his Blue Steel, Le Tigre, Ferrari and our personal favourite Magnum. But that was before Aussie label Franks hit the scene and before you had options. Now you can kick around at the beach wearing a short leg or mid leg alternative in a variety of colours and hand-drawn prints. Oh, and they work really well with that low-cut v-neck tee your mates love to give you crap about. Read more

Simple, colorful and somewhat esoteric, I really dig the work of New York illustrator, Rich Tu, a new SVA graduate student. It was something else to see his finely textured images blown up to poster size and beautifully displayed at the recent SVA student show. Read more
I don’t care if Jimmy Hendrix was dragged kicking and screaming from where he lies, put through a torrid round of detox, and handed an invisible guitar – a Flying V carved out of the bones of Robert Johnson. It would still pale in comparison to this. Read more
This year’s Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, staged over 603,000 square meters, was a stunning exhibition of colour and creativity amongst mounds and mounds of ice and imagination. Read more
I’ve been a big fan of Michelle Vandermeer’s work since I came across her Mini Majellen zines at this year’s Sydney Writers Festival. Describing herself as a doer — as in one of those people who are always doing or making something — Michelle’s work, which includes book binding, illustration, jewelery making and her zines, stems from an internal creative springboard and a double degree in architecture and graphic design. Her work is smart and succinct. Read more
Cloud Control have just unravelled a newly recorded track, Gold Canary, from their forthcoming 2010 album. It’s straight up pastoral Blue Mountains goodness. I actually heard it live earlier this year and it sounded quite rad.

While I feel I am not alone in breathing a sigh of relief over this season’s purging of fluoro, in retrospect there was a lot to be learned from the experience: don’t wear all fluoro, or don’t wear fluoro at all. And we slowly trudged back to black, which, despite what other colors may think, will always be the new black. Read more

Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Read more
