Filmmaker Guillaume Blanchet, cyclist extraordinaire, is the Man Who Lived On His Bike, eating, sleeping and riding his two-wheeled chariot for days and days across Montreal. Effortlessly edited and energetic, this film is steadily gaining award-after-award. One definitely worth watching.

Just recently, Jeff Bridges has been nominated for an award for the photographs he’s been taking on the sets of movies he’s been involved in since 1984. When a film is released today, it’s treated as a brand. Like a burger chain’s logo, artwork for posters and Blu-ray covers barely change between markets. But back in the 70s it was a different story. This short colour video of London was shot in 1927 using a pioneering invention known as the Friese-Greene Colour Process. It’s a beautiful bit of film, and brings old London to life in a way I’ve never seen before. Poignant and mesmerising, and helped along by a great musical score.

One of the greatest movies ever. River’s Edge is a 1986 film about a group of high school kids. One of them murders their friend and the rest cover it up. Listen to this cast: Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye and Dennis Hopper, among others. The soundtrack includes Slayer, the Wipers and Agent Orange. It’s loosely based on the 1981 murder of Marcy Renee Conrad. I actually watched it on LSD once, but would not recommend it.

I discovered the anime series Berserk many years ago through a friend and I was immediately hooked. It was made in the 90‘s and based on the Manga by Kentaro Miura. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest stories ever told. Demons, swords, violence, amazing character development… what more could you ask for? Berserk also introduced me to two great Japanese bands, Penpals, who do the opening theme ‘Tell Me Why,’ and Silver Fins’ ‘Waiting So Long’, the closing theme.

I recently watched this movie because I’m a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. It talks about the (possible) hidden meanings the director put in the film, The Shining. Things such as his involvement in faking the Apollo 11 moon landing or his thoughts on the slaughter of the American Indians. They even talk about watching the movie forwards and backwards at the same time and show some cool examples of how this works together. While some of the ideas seem a bit far fetched, I must admit it was pretty fascinating.

So Neels Castillon was shooting a commercial with Mathias Touzeris in Marseille, France, when a massive flock of starlings turned up and started a mass aerial display. The technical term for the dance is ‘murmuration’, and Alt-J’s Hand-made makes a really good soundtrack for the birds’ ensemble performance.

Cassandra Brooks, a Stanford University PhD student who is now blogging onboard a research cruise in Antarctica, recently posted an intriguing time-lapse video montage of its icebreaker, Nathaniel B. Palmer, making its way through the Ross Sea.

Watch out for the part where Brooks goes ‘Sometimes, icebergs threaten to barricade us, other days we easily dodge them’. It sounds like it could almost be a metaphor for life and its difficulties.

Line uses 24 camera motion capture to make this short film which was inspired by dancing in a Brixton nightclub with dancer Afua Awuku and the dynamic paintings of Jackson Pollock. As a nightclub DJ, Reuben played the Brazilian track Negrume da Noite by Virginia Rodrigues.

Since this was my first year not living with my parents, I was worried that my winter visit home to Washington would leave me unfulfilled and nostalgic for the old days. Thankfully, my Christmas break was quite the opposite from the sad one that’s portrayed in my new film, No More Waiting. To make this film, I was working as a one-man-crew, shooting with two of my best friends in my favorite state in the US.

After ten months of filming, Melbourne-based photographer Nathan Kaso, has produced this amazing short tilt-shift time-lapse film of my city. The film captures a range of different events and festivals held in the city throughout the year. Majority of the filming was done from Eureka Tower’s Skydeck and some car parks and bridges. The tilt-shift effect and grading was applied in Photoshop, and the film was edited in After Effects and Premiere Pro CS6.

Curated and created by LA-based graphic designer Roxy Radulescu, the Movies in Color blog features movie stills and their color palettes. Radulescu first uses a color generator to generate a basic, first-cut range of swatches, then assembles a general color spectrum using that, as well as the prominent colors from the still. These visuals rock in an understated fashion.

I helped Jo Peel on one of her Wall projects in East London. I was taking still photographs whilst Peel was painting her latest masterpiece of a local, urban street scene. By using brushes as well as sprays, Peel paints smaller strokes that build up to give real, overall impact. The photographs were then made into a superb animation piece that can be seen above.

Tim Sessler, a Brooklyn-based cinematographer and documentary filmmaker, has created another masterpiece that will inspire you to travel and see places from above. The video was filmed on the flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia via Salt Lake City. These amazing aerial shots were taken using a Canon 5D Mark III. Music artists Jónsi and Alex complimented this black and white video with a background track called Indian Summer.

David Bowie fans take note: if you missed the wonderful tribute, Dave, released at the end of 2012 be sure and take time out to enjoy it now. Part-art piece, part-music and movie tribute, Dave was an ambitious project put together by the music production duo, Soulwax, a.k.a. 2 Many DJs.

In their words: ‘There are many legends in the music industry but for us, there is no greater than the mighty Dave. We’ve included all things Bowie, whether that is original songs, covers, backing vocals, production work or reworks we made, to attempt to give you the full scope of the man’s genius’. Dave is one part of a bigger project called Radio Soulwax, an internet destination that streams unique music and video mash-ups created by Soulwax, 24 hours a day.
