Female rap is often written off as some type of novelty thing in hip hop these days. Many of the women partaking either have some type of gimmick to them or just don’t really have the charisma to capture people’s attention for very long. Well, UZOY (pronounced Uzi, like the gun) might have something to say about that. A native of Houston, UZOY’s been building up a name for herself within the rap world for a while now and has opened up for a few big name rappers (Big Sean, Trae Tha Truth, Lupe Fiasco, Bun B).

She recently released a video for a song off of her debut mixtape, The DEFinition, entitled Fast Forward, which is a pretty creative spin on music videos. It’s shot from a first person point of view and she’s not even the primary focus of it all. At around the 1:30 mark, it takes a turn into an all out battle with zombies. Similar to something like Shaun of The Dead which isn’t a bad comparison at all.

She calls herself the Hip Hop Nancy Sinatra. I call her my new favourite artist. A true love song for our generation, her poetic candour fused with the sound of her velvety voice gives me goose bumps.
