In early 1965, LIFE photographer Bill Ray spent several weeks with The Hells Angels. Ray recalls his days and nights with Buzzard, Hambone, Big D, and other Angels (and their ‘old ladies’) at a time when the roar of Harleys and the sight of long-haired bikers was still new, alien, and for the average, law-abiding citizen, simply terrifying. David Vintiner is a British portrait photographer living in London. These portraits are from a personal project, Enthusiasts, which was selected for the Creative Review Photography Annual last year. He writes: ‘My Enthusiasts were shot on location at a model railway exhibition in Birmingham, England. In my photography I’m drawn to the subtlety of the everyday, in this case, passion for a hobby’.

The neutrality of the background allows us to focus on the differences between an apparently similar group of sitters. Stephan Tillmans is a Berlin-based photographer. He writes: ‘The Luminant Point Arrays show cathode-ray-tube televisions being switched off. The television picture breaks down and creates a structure of light. The images open up a dialogue between the relationship of abstraction and concretion in photography as the breakdown of the television picture describes the breakdown of external reference. Photographer Alicia Rius is based in the Netherlands. Her series, From the Back Seat of My Car, is a testament to her vision of viewing abandoned objects as ‘hidden treasures’. She writes: ‘I did not plan this project. I never looked for these cars, and in fact, I think they found me. I wanted to immortalize their beauty and turn the tin into something romantic’.

Sam A Harris ia a photographer currently based in Brighton. Of this series, he writes: ‘For me, Untitled (bubbles) was more of a technical task as opposed to a project with any exact conceptual direction. It was a strive for perfection, and an attempt to photograph an ever changing and unpredictable object in a unique manner’.

Nadav Bagim is a photographer from Ramat-Gan, Israel. His WonderLand images are created by using unique but simple artificial lighting and household objects from vegetables to plastic bags. The photos are shot inside a miniature studio. The insects were found in his apartment and on plants outside his window. They were not harmed during shooting.

Heinz Maier recently started photographing last year. His main interest is in macro photography, specifically water drops (featured here) and insects.

Mishka Henner is a photographer and artist living and working in Manchester, England. About this project, he writes: ‘No Man’s Land explores the margins of urban and rural environments in Europe as experienced by what appear to be women soliciting sex, all captured by Google Street View cameras. Sourcing locations from online where men share local knowledge on the whereabouts of sex workers, these areas were then visited online and re-framed using the Street View cameras’.

What were some of the inspirations for Journal of Ardency? (watch the video at the bottom of this interview}
‘Shrapnel in the heart. Despair. Unrequited love’.

When do you get the best ideas for songs and lyrics?
‘Walking in cemeteries, writing to friends, staying up past dawn, falling in love, getting my heart ripped out. Being ever so Naive. They just pop into my head with a phrase and melody and I go from there. Songs are the angels saving me from a mental avalanche of questions that have no answers. It’s just about survival. Turning pain into pleasure. Like Woody Allen’s Hannah and her sisters, I just re write my own love life. Make the non-fiction fiction and fiction non.

How would you describe your style?
‘Style … hmm. Well, my under garments are usually more expensive than my jewelry. But that’s mostly because I tend to leave them on bedside tables. These days I am more concerned about what’s underneath, what’s closest to my body. The lace you wear under a ripped t-shirt can make you feel sexier than anything. Now that summer is upon us, I do struggle since I love layers. I love suit jackets and button down Dior Men’s shirt’s. Lace up anything, be it shoes, boots, corsets …’

What item of clothing would you never be caught dead wearing?
‘Blue sweat pants, dead giveaway of depression. If you see a friend in blue sweat pants, make them tea, give them a warm hug, a shoulder to cry on, a few shots of tequila, then a night on the town. Next day, repeat. Might not work indefinitely, but if they have bi-polar, then things will eventually work out’.

Who is the most fashionable woman that you know?
‘My Grandmother (of course) and then Caroline Polachek of Chairlift and Jill Martinelli, who designs Lady Grey jewelry. Both have superb style’.

What were some of the inspirations for Is This Hyperreal?
‘Riot Grrl in 2012, female superheroes, Sonic Youth, B52’s, CBGBs, Poly Styrene’.

When do you get the best ideas for songs and lyrics?
‘I have these moments, when I witness something or something strikes me, I just immediately want to write about it. Sometimes I quickly take a note that I come back to months or even years later. On the song, Blood In My Eyes, it was instant. I was working on the artwork for the album and I felt that we never wrote about the issue of human trafficking before. Two days later the song was finished’.

How would you describe your style?
In terms of work ethic, fashion style and attitude towards creative work, I think may as well have been the inofficial love child of Rei Kawakubo and Maya Deren’.

What item of clothing would you never be caught dead wearing?
‘Birkenstock’s, and for that matter, any type of shoes that resemble them; anything floral printed; anything frilled or ruffled’.

How do you get ready for a show?
‘When I am on tour, I don’t get much sleep, so at some point everything just becomes sureal. I can disconnect myself from everything, even if I am surrounded by zillions of drugged up and drunken people. That helps me get the focus back. I just think of the music and the idea behind the songs, that gives me all energy, no matter how the rest of the day or night has been’.

What did you have for breakfast this morning?
‘Large coffee’.

What is your ideal day in Berlin?
‘Berlin is a very dark city. I love those moments, they make me want to write music. Sometimes it’s those little things: you walk down an empty street at night, it’s cold and everything looks and feels like a David Lynch movie. You get to the studio and wonder, what was that? And then you write …’

Brooklyn-based photographer Sara Naim’s series, Beethoven-Moonlight Sonata, ‘looks at translating sound into a photographic image. Ludwig Van Beethoven’s symphony vibrates through milk. He composed this piece in the early 1800’s for his blind pupil and lover, Giuletta Gucciardi. Gucciardi said to Beethoven that she wished she could see the moonlight. Beethoven then composed a piece about the moonlight’s reflection off Austria’s Lake Lucerne, called Moonlight Sonata’. [via Feature Shoot]

Pahnl, a street artist from the UK, has been stenciling since 2003: ‘I take huge influence from comics and street signage, but I add my own subversive twist. I aim to make my work interact with its environment’, he says. This stop motion animation, Nowhere Near Here, uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever it is a dog does.

Curated by Feature Shoot’s Alison Zavos, Sea Change is a group photography exhibition — part of the Wassaic Summer Festival — which examines our complicated relationship with animals and the environment in wake of the greatest environmental disaster in American history, the BP oil spill. Featuring the work of 25 emerging and established photographers, most of whom are based in New York, the exhibition (August 13-22) will be displayed on the beautifully decaying walls of seven rooms in the old Greek Revival Hotel section of Maxon Mills.
