According to his biography, Orouni is the name of a parasitic plant that lives in damp woods, dependent on a host tree for its nourishment. Quite what the artist behind the name is feeding on at the moment is open to question. A listen to his album, A Matter of Scale, triggers memories of early Velvet Underground brought back down to earth a bit: that drifting, almost dreamlike, narrative, this time influenced by pure nature rather than the manufactured products of it. New York photographer Jennifer Loeber’s series, Cruel Story of Youth, is based on the Rowe Camp for teenagers, where she spent some time and which is ‘grounded in the ideals of a counter-cultural past and freed from the forced constraints of a conventional camp experience. It’s a glimpse into what the world would be like if no ideas were too absurd, and eccentricity was the rule, not the exception’. Read more

I started reading a very funny book over the weekend by the English writer Toby Young called The Sound Of No Hands Clapping. Brilliant. Never has a title been so apt as Young bumbles his way through the fickle Hollywood movie industry. It’s an excellent study in human nature. Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
